South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Cronulla Sharks, Round 6 2024 - Expert Prediction

The grave will be dug deeper for the Bunnies this week when they face a fresh Cronulla side that has had the extra week to prepare after the intense start to 2024. The Sharkies smell blood and they will tear the lame Rabbitohs apart this week.

Jason Demetriou’s time as the Rabbitohs head coach is on the verge of coming to an end and unfortunately he will be put under even more pressure after another big loss against Cronulla this week. The Sharks have everything in their repertoire to put on big points and they will not hold back attacking the worst defensive side in the NRL.

The Bunnies have conceded an average 28.29 points since round 12 last season and with the roster that they have on the field that is completely unacceptable. Cronulla are not going to have any trouble putting up those numbers this week after all of the new positional changes in the Bunnies lineup due to suspension and poor form.

I expect the Sharks to run in five or six tries and come over their 25.5-point team total and with the Rabbitohs are missing their strike players Latrell Mitchell and Damien Cook as 18th man I can’t really see where they are going to find the creativity to break the line of the Sharks, so I am going to take the Shire Boys 13+ as well.

This match smells like big numbers for halfback Nicho Hynes, who is chasing his form from his Dally M winning season in 2022. Hynes will get a chance to run at the Rabbitohs line and he will cross for a try along with setting up plenty and tormenting the Bunnies all night.

  • 2 of 3 sharks wins this season have been by 13+
  • South Sydney concede the most run metres of any team in the NRL with an average of 1,571.6 per game.
  • The Rabbitohs have conceded 28 points or more in 4 of their 5 matches this season.
  • The Rabbitohs have conceded 5 tries to opposing halves in their past 3 games.

Head to Head

The Rabbitohs and the Sharks split the pot last season with a win each, south won in round 1 27-18 and Cronulla returned serve 26-16.

South Sydney have the edge 4-3 in all matches played against the Sharks since 2019.

It is no secret that the Rabbitohs are in trouble carrying their late season form from 2023, which saw them miss the finals, and bringing straight into the 2024 season and has them at the bottom of the ladder.

The drama surrounding Latrell Mitchell doesn’t help, but it goes deeper than that. The defensive structure and effort isn’t there for the Bunnies, who have conceded an average of 32.4 points per game on the back of conceding the most pressure from 1,571.6 run metres per game.

South Sydney Rabbitohs Team News

Jye Gray will get first crack at Latrell Mitchell’s No. 1 jersey with the star fullback suspended for three weeks.

Tyrone Munro will play his first game of the season replacing Isaac Thompson. Peter Mamouzelos will start at hooker with Damien Cook relegated to 18th man.

Davvy Moale, Shaq Mitchell and  Siliva Havili have also been added to the 17.

Cronulla welcomed the week’s rest from the bye after coming back from 18 points down against Canberra to win the match 36-22 back in round 4. The Sharks halves Nicho Hynes and Braydon Trindell put in their best performances of the season, being involved in two tries and three linebreaks between them orchestrating the comeback.

Despite being on three wins the Sharks still have a lot to work on, especially in defence as they head into round 6 with the worst points differential in the top 8 at +11.

Cronulla Sharks Team News

Briton Nikora has served his suspension and will move back on the edge with Siosifa Talakai moving to the bench and Daniel Atkinson dropping out.

Toby Rudolf and Braden Hamlin-Uele could be late additions which would reshuffle the bench.
