Penrith Panthers vs Wests Tigers, Round 7 2024 - Expert Prediction

The Panthers have taken their home game to Bathurst this weekend and will come away with a win but the Tigers will keep things close and cover the large line.

For the past 3 seasons Penrith have taken one home game per year to Carrington Park in Bathurst continuing to build on their success and reach into western NSW. In round 9 of 2023 the opponent was also Wests Tigers and the visitors managed to stage an upset over the defending premiers handing them a 12-8 loss in front of just over 11,000 spectators.

With Penrith’s dominance and the Tigers almost willful losing record it would be easy to think that the scores between these teams over the past 8 games would all be blowouts in the Panthers favour. But they aren’t and the Tigers have even won 3 of the 8 games played since 2019. With the Panthers in a minor form slump compared to their own standard and Wests trying to build momentum around their much improved core, there is an opportunity here for the Tigers to repeat their winning efforts from 2023.

Nathan Cleary is still out for Penrith and the effect is easy to be seen as Penrith have struggled to score points when given the opportunity close to their opponents line. Wests have not had it easy either but with the return of Lachlan Galvin this week the expectation is at least higher that they will be able to produce something when attacking the Panthers line.

I am riding with the Tigers to cover the large line as they often do against the Panthers. The Game Total trend is hard to ignore aswell considering the Panthers are also missing Cleary. Justin Olam has scored the most tries for the Tigers so far this year so we will back him in for a four pointer here.

  • Both teams are top 6 in the NRL in Opposition Run Metres restricting their opponents from gaining valuable territory with the ball
  • The Wests Tigers have covered the line in 6 of the last 8 games against Penrith including the last 4 in a row
  • 8 games in a row between these teams have gone Under the Game Total
  • Justin Olam has scored 3 tries in 4 games this season

Head to Head

The Panthers and Tigers have played 8 times against each other over the past 5 seasons dating back to 2019. Penrith have won 5 of those games but have only covered the line in 2 of the 8. The most recent game last year was also played in Bathurst with Wests coming away victorious 12-8 and covering as double digit underdogs as they are again this weekend.

All 8 games have gone Under the points total and the previous two games in a row have been decided by margins of less than a converted try.

Penrith had the Bye last weekend with the team benefiting from a much needed rest. A host of players for the Panthers were battered and beaten from a tough start to the season which for them started with the World Club Challenge in England.

In their previous game against the Sea Eagles in round 5 the Panthers had the bulk of the Territory (55%) in the game and were tackled 34 times in the Manly 20m zone for only 3 tries, well below their average during this period of dominance. Nathan Cleary is a steadying voice and figure which the Panthers sorely miss.

Penrith Panthers Team News

Nathan Cleary is still out with Brad Schneider retaining the 7 jersey. Scott Sorensen has though overcome his battle with injury and returns to the starting side pushing Luke Garner to the interchange with Matt Eisenhuth going back to the reserves.

The Tigers momentum was short lived with them now losing two on the trot to the Dolphins and Dragons. In their game against St George last weekend they were statistically the better team but as has been for a number of years they were unable to convert their chances into points.

Wests had 19 tackles inside the Dragons 20m zone but could only come up with two tries in the game. Three of the four tries their opposition scored last weekend came down the left side with the defence left looking like cones as the Dragons ran rings around them.

Wests Tigers Team News

A host of changes for the Tigers with Brent Naden being named to play his first game of the season in the centres, Solomona Faataape is completely out of the 22. Lachlan Galvin is back from suspension lining up at five-eighth. Jayden Sullivan has been left out of the team with Latu Fainu named as the utility and Jake Simpkin the back up in the reserves.

John Bateman returns from concussion protocols with Alex Seyfarth reverting to the bench and is joined by Sam Fainu pushing Asu Kepaoa to the reserves.

The Panthers are obviously the better team on paper but there is something about the Tigers that gives them the heebyjeebies. The win last year in Bathurst coupled with the trend of covering gives me no other option than to take the large number on offer for the Tigers. Game Total Under and Olam to score, lessgoo.
