Penrith Panthers vs St George Dragons, Round 13 2024 - Expert Prediction

The Panthers and Dragons are both rocked by Origin selection and are missing all of their big names. It is a bit of a coin toss this one but the weight is definitely on the Panthers who should sneak by with the Dragons not offering any stability even with the best 17 on the park.

The confidence is obviously not all that high in Penrith’s attack without Cleary, Luai, Edwards, Martin, Yeo and To’o, but the confidence is lower in St George who are missing Hunt, Lomax and Su’A to Origin and Jack Bird to injury.

I don’t see the Dragons mustering any sort of attack that is why I have leant towards the Panthers getting a 10+ point win in this one. Ivan Cleary will hold good defensive structure in his boys and the Penrith replacements have proven that they can get the job done.

With the lack of attack expected from the Dragons and the Panthers unlikely to put up massive points themselves, expect this game to also hit the Under on the Game Total.

  • Penrith concedes an average of just 14.2 points per game.
  • 2 of the past 3 Penrith games have gone Under the Game Total.
  • 4 of the past 6 Dragons games have gone Under the Game Total.
  • Brad Schneider has scored 2 tries in 4 appearances this season.

Head to Head

Penrith have won each match over the past 5 years against St George with the two teams playing just once each season.

The Panthers got up 26-18 in a close battle in Round 14 last season, with the scores locked in the 70th minute until Moses Leota barrelled over for a try.

The Panthers made a statement last week, crushing league leaders the Cronulla Sharks 42-0. Penrith played 72% of the match in the Sharks half completely suffocating them out of the game, allowing them just 851 run metres which is 40% less than their season average of 1442 RM/G.

The Panthers performance proved that they are more than a one-man show with their leader Nathan Cleary out injured. They played their brand of football at an exceptional level and have sent a real warning sign again through the NRL.

The Saints were back to their old tricks again last week, getting pushed around by their opposition and handing them quality field position through unforced mistakes.

The Bulldogs were sharp in attack in the 44-12 against the Dragons, however, they would never have had the opportunity to pile on the points if St George were more disciplined with the footy and not hand it over to Canterbury in their own half.

After a strong start to the season it is looking glum for the Dragons who have conceded an average of 34.5 points per game over the past 4 weeks.

St George Dragons Team News

Sione Finau and Max and Matt Feagai will move into the backs with Jesse Marschke taking over from Hunt.
