Penrith Panthers vs Melbourne Storm, Round 24 2024 - Expert Prediction

Man this is hard, Penrith are hitting their straps at just the right time but Melbourne have been a beacon of consistency all season long. I am going to side with the Panthers and it’s because of two key areas.

Defence - the stats and the eye test confirm to me that Penrith are a better defensive team. They have allowed fewer points to top 5 attacking teams and have fewer opposition Linebreaks and Run Metres than the Storm.

Kicking - Jahrome Hughes and Cam Munster are great, fantastic even, but they aren’t Nathan Cleary. Cleary’s ability to put the ball on a string is not often talked about when comparing teams for betting purposes. Penrith rarely need to kick themselves out of their own end because of their metre churning back 3. But with Melbourne pressuring there is every chance Cleary will be called upon in this one, to not only get them out of trouble but then at the other end of the park pierce the opposition line with precision kicks to the in-goal.

  • Penrith have allowed only 17.3 pts per game in 6 clashes with top 5 attacking teams.
  • The Panthers allow the fewest Run Metres (1313m) and the 4th fewest Linebreaks (4.2) per game in the NRL.
  • Melbourne concede the most Offloads of any team in the league at 10.7 per game.
  • The Panthers left side attack scores 33% of their tries with the Storm only having the 3rd worst defence in the NRL on that side.

Head to Head

The Panthers and Storm have a storied history having played each other in 9 regular season games and 3 finals since the beginning of the 2019 season. Penrith have won the two most recent Prelim matchups in 2021 and 2023 but it was the Storm who took Grand Final honours in 2020, the year before the Panthers dynasty began.

In the 9 regular season matchups the Panthers hold a narrow 5-4 lead in the head to head with Melbourne holding the 5-4 advantage ATS.

The most recent clash was in Round 1 this season with Melbourne taking an 8-0 victory at AAMI Park.

The Under has hit in 5 of 9 games whilst the Winning Margin has been 13+ in 6 of 9 matchups.

The Panthers were able to snatch the win from the jaws of defeat last weekend against their bogey team Parramatta. The Eels led 34-16 with 7 minutes remaining on the clock but the defending premiers never gave up running in 3 tries in 3 minutes to level up the scores. The final conversion from Nathan Cleary breaking the hearts of opposition supporters as they saw their team throw away another win.

Penrith completed only 26/35 sets in the game managing 1295 Run Metres in one of their least convincing wins of the year. With only 19 Tackles Inside 20m of their opponents they were somewhat lucky the poor outside defence fell apart, opening up scoring opportunities.

The Storm sit atop the NRL ladder and are back in the winners circle after a comfortable 28-16 victory over the Rabbitohs last weekend. With 8 wins across their last 9 games they are one of the most in-form teams in the NRL and the stats back it up.

Over those 9 games Melbourne average 28.8 points per game whilst restricting their opponents to only 18.4 points on average. The Storm also top the league in Linebreaks taking 6 of them last weekend against the Bunnies.
