Penrith Panthers vs Brisbane Broncos Tips

Reigning premiers the Penrith Panthers hit their stride in round 2 after being held scoreless by Melbourne in round 1. They now face their 2023 NRL Grand Final opponents the Brisbane Broncos in a rematch.

Last year's runners-up missing their general Adam Reynolds, which has this game now swinging heavily in the favour of another Panthers win.

Brisbane will rely heavily on their defence to keep them in the game and the loss of their halfback Reynolds hurts them in more ways than just their attack on the Panthers line.

Nathan Cleary’s kicking game will pin the Panthers’ opposition deep into their half and Reynolds is one of the only other men in the NRL that compete with the Penrith playmaker in that regard and play the territory game.

I expect that this match will be a close battle in the first half but as the game goes on the Broncos defence will begin to tire and we will see the Panthers take more and more control of the match as it goes on.

With that in mind, I like the look of the the second half line of 4.5 points in the Panthers favour as I expect them to win the game after the break. I don’t expect a lot of points before halftime so this game will lean towards the Under 38.50 game total.

With Reynolds out we can expect Reece Walsh to be heavily involved in the match, especially inside the Penrith 20 metres. The slick fullback will more often than not be the link to the outside backs, however, he will get his opportunities to take on the line and will slip through for his fourth try of the season.

  • Penrith has won 6 of the last 7 games against Brisbane.
  • Brisbane has lost 5 of their last 6 games at BlueBet Stadium.
  • The Under has hit in 6 of the previous 8 games between Penrith and Brisbane.
  • Reece Walsh is tied first in the NRL with 3 tries, scoring in both matches for the Broncos.

Head to Head

Brisbane failed to turn a 16-point lead into a grand final win last time these two teams met which continued a poor run in the head-to-head stats against Penrith.

The Panthers have won six of the last seven games against Brisbane, however, the Broncos did win the match against the Panthers 13-12 back in round 1 last season at BlueBet Stadium.

It was the first win for Brisbane in Penrith since round 6 of the 2009 season.

Penrith Panthers Form

The Panthers won their first regular season match against Parramatta in five matches, beating the Eels more comfortably than the 26-18 scoreline suggests.

The Panthers had 58 percent of the territory in the match on the back of the extra 426 run metres they piled on, pinning Parra in their own end for long periods of the match.

Izack Tago tallied two more linebreaks than the whole Eels team combined with the 21-year-old breaking the Parramatta line six times throughout the match as the Panthers recorded 10 total linebreaks to Parramatta’s fou.

Brisbane Broncos Form

The Broncos put in a much better performance back on home soil after losing their opening match against the Roosters in Vegas.

Brisbane enjoyed their season opener at the Cauldron, beating the Rabbits 28-18 in a sublime performance by Reece Walsh who is becoming more and more of a superstar with each game he plays.

The Broncos fullback scored two tries, had a linebreak and a linebreak assist along with eight runs and even 236 kick metres and a forced drop out. A complete performance from the 21-year-old.

Brisbane Broncos Team News

Adam Reynolds will miss the clash for the Broncos and Jock Madden will replace him at No.7.

Payne Haas had some injury concerns after the Broncos win over the Bunnies but has been cleared to play.
