The Cowboys will travel to Commbank Stadium on Saturday and take on the Eels who are scratching their heads trying to find some attacking flow since the departure of Mitchell Mosses through injury. The Cowboys will use this game to find some defensive form against the lacklustre attack of the Eels and will do enough to get the win and cover the 2.5 points as favourites.

The North Queensland attack has been ruthless against its weaker opponents this season which will have the Eels whimpering back into their hole after they allowed the Raiders to pile up 44 points on them last weekend. Scott Drinkwater has been the catalyst for the Cowboys and I expect him to tear shreds through the Eels defence working in with his double-threat on the outside Valentine Holmes and Murray Taulagi.

The decision of coach Brad Arthur to play Daejarn Asi in the halves will be a positive for the Eels, but they simply will not be able to keep up with the scoring pace of the Cowboys, who will have no trouble covering the 2.5 points as favourites.

North Queensland have had defensive lapses in all of the games this season so even though we are facing a high game total of 47.5 points, I expect that the Over will hit as I predict that the eels will do better this week in attack and help push the total up.

The Cowboys will be attacking with Scott Drinkwater on both sides of the field but they will be peppering on the left more often which will see Val Holmes cross for his third try of the season.

  • The Eels have lost both matches without Mitchell Moses this season.
  • The Cowboys average the most points of any team, scoring 31.4 points per game in 2024.
  • The Eels allow their opponents to break their line 6.8 times per game on average, ranked second-worst in the NRL.
  • Valentine Holmes has never scored a try against Parramatta in 10 appearances (time to break the hoodoo).

Head to Head

The Parramatta Eels got the win against North Queensland 24-16 in round 13 last season with the Cowboys returning the favour by flipping the scoreline, in round 21 at QCB Stadium.

Both teams have won three regular season games each since 2019, however, Parramatta got the vital 24-20 win in the Preliminary Final back in 2022.

Parramatta has been poor to say the least since losing NSW halfback Mitchell Moses two rounds ago. The Eels have scored just 4 tries in 2 games, despite having a total of 61 tackles in their opponents redzone.

Brad Arthur has made changes this week to help improve their attack, however their defence was also a major problem in their 41-8 drubbing from Canberra last week, conceding 10 linebreaks and conceding 597 more run metres, which was over a half of their own metres.

North Queensland looked like the top-four side that they are in the first half of their 35-22 win against the Titans on Sunday. However, Todd Payton would not be happy with his men allowing the Titans to cross their line for three tries in 7 minutes in the second half, having a huge defensive lapse.

The Cowboys have put up impressive attacking numbers this season averaging 31.4 points per game as the only team to average over 5 tries in each match. They also lead the league in linebreaks with 6 per game. These stats look great but can be deceiving considering they have had one of the easiest strengths of schedule to start the season, racking up wins against the Titans, Dragons, Knights and Dolphins.

Verdict

There will be plenty of points on offer at Commbank Stadium with both teams going blow for blow which will see the game total surpassed. The Cowboys will get the better of the Eels in this western shootout and cover the 2.5 points as favourites.

Valentine Holmes has never crossed when facing the Eels and that trend will be broken this week.
