Parramatta Eels vs Dolphins, Round 7 2024 - Expert Prediction

The Dolphins season will come under siege and come unstuck as it did in their inaugural year with their depth being tested more than any other club this season with the loss of so many of their starting 13. The Eels are going to strike and electrify the Dolphins in Darwin with a big win, just as they did last season against the newcomers.

The Eels looked like a new side with Daejarn Asi filling in for the injured Mitch Moses. They were much more organised and halves partner Dylan Brown appreciated the shared creative load which unlocked his running game.

The Eels can be petrifying when they get going and with King Gutho looking in the best form of his career Parramatta are not to be mucked around with, if they can put in a repeat performance like they did against the Cowboys last week.

The Dolphins injury woes are a huge hole with Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow joining the list of Herbie Farnworth, Felise Kaufusi and Tom Flegler who were already out for an extended time. The Dolphins looked flat at best against the Broncos last week and were no real threat in attack besides their two meaningless late tries.

I expect the Eels to build on their last week’s performance and really put the Dolphins to the sword, covering the 7.5 points as the favourites in Darwin. After watching the attack of the Dolphins last week I don’t see them really challenging the Parramatta line a whole lot and predict that they will score less 17.5 points in the match.

The points could come thick and fast for the Parramatta Eels if they get on a roll and I expect that Clint Gutherson will be in the middle of the action as he often is in Darwin.

  • Parramatta has won 6 of their past 9 games at TIO Stadium in Darwin.
  • The Dolphins went 2-2 without Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow in their side last season.
  • The Dolphins rank 14th in the NRL with 7, 023 run metres.
  • Clint Gutherson scored 2 tries against the Dolphins last season.

Head to Head

The Eels put on seven tries in the first half against the Dolphins in 2023 to run away with the match 48-20 with Will Penisini and Clunt Gutherson scoring doubles.

The Eels looked all but gone after their second loss without Mitch Moses when they went down to the Raiders 41-8 in round 5 and slumped to a 2-3 record. But in stepped Daejarn Asi who gave the Eels some shape and creativity that they were missing along with a solid kicking game that had the Cowboys on the back-foot in the Eels 27-20 victory.

Asi and halves partner Dylan Brown combined well with the important stat being that Brown had 118 run metres in the game, taking on the line and opening things up for his team. Asi was also able to take the kicking load off his halfback sharing the duties, which was not the case with Baize Talagi the week prior.

Parramatta Eels Team News

Blaize Talagi has forced his way into the side at the expense of Kelma Tuilagi who moves to the reserves.

The Dolphins are in big trouble again on the injury front with Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow being added to the long injury list for the newcombers that is building up at this time of year just as it did in their inaugural season when their wheels began to fall off.

The Dolphins suffered just their second loss of the season when they went down to the Broncos 28-16, with the score only looking respectable because of two soft, late tries let in by Brisbane once the result was already secure.

The future does not look bright for the Dolphins with the amount of injury concerns and also dealing with suspension

Dolphins Team News

Trai Fuller will take the fullback spot from Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow who is out for about a month with a hamstring injury.

Sean O’Sullivan has been added to the bench after Anthony Milford was suspended. Max Plath returns at starting-lock with Ray Stone moving to the bench due to the suspension of Lachlan Hubner.

The Eels are going to pick on the injured Dolphins and will have no trouble covering the 7.5-point line as favourites. It is hard to see where Redcliff are going to find their creativity in attack and they will struggle to score 18 points in this one.
The flood gates could open in this contest so expect Gutho to be in the thick of it and cross for a try.
