Sharks vs Raiders Preview, Predictions & Betting

The Cronulla Sharks host the Canberra Raiders in a must-win game for the men from the shire.

Cronulla will need a victory to hold onto a top-eight spot for another week, but this week is worth more than just the two points. It is the last home game for club legend Paul Gallen as well as their last home game for two years, as the leagues club gets renovations.

Canberra will need to be the party poopers and have the form coming into the game with tight games against top sides like the Roosters, Storm and Sea Eagles.

Sharks Team News

The Sharks have a couple of changes to the side that defeated the Warriors last weekend.

Sosaia Feki has been sidelined with a groin issue and will be replaced by Sione Katoa. Jayson Bukuya comes back into the team via the bench for the injured Jack Williams.

Raiders Team News

The Raiders will be forced to make a number of changes to the team that lost to Manly last week.

Following the suspension of Joey Leilua, Nick Cotric will move from the wing to the centre position with Bailey Simonsson moving into the starting side on the wing.

Siliva Havili will get the last bench spot with Simonsson moving into the starting side.

Sharks vs Raiders Head To Head

Cronulla holds the lead over the Raiders in their all-time clashes.

Since 1998, these two teams have played 40 times with the Sharks leading the Raiders 23 to 17. Overall, the Sharks lead 41 to 34 since 1982.

The last two matches between these two teams have been decided by four points or less with each team getting a win.

At the venue, Canberra has won six of the last ten matches at Shark Park.

Sharks vs Raiders Match Up

The battle of the fullbacks is the focus on the Sunday afternoon clash.

Josh Dugan has only missed four games this season which is amazing considering his proneness to injuries. Dugan sits third in the NRL for tackle breaks behind superstar duo James Tedesco and Roger Tuivasa-Sheck.

Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad is a running machine. He leads the NRL in kick return metres with 1500, 258 in front of his next rival James Tedesco. He also sits in the top five for run metres and sits inside the top ten for tackle-breaks.

Both these players will be heavily involved for the entire 80 minutes and I expect them to come head-to-head several times throughout the game.

Sharks vs Raiders Key Statistics

  • Canberra leads the NRL with 368 dummy-half runs, 40 more than the next best
  • Cronulla sits third in the NRL in line breaks and tackle breaks with 101 and 752 respectively
  • When these teams played in June, two points separated them

Verdict

I am taking the Sharks in a close one.

This is going to be a cracking game with top eight repercussions for both sides. I think the sentimentally may be telling here as the Sharks look to farewell one of their all-time great players in Paul Gallen.

I don’t expect there will be a lot in this, so taking Cronulla 1-12 is a good bet.
