Panthers vs Sharks Preview, Predictions & Betting Tips

Friday night football has a huge clash between two teams who are battling for the final spots inside the top-eight.

Penrith has been poor for the previous two weeks against the Raiders and Bulldogs and will be looking to break their two-game losing streak.

Cronulla is on a two-game winning streak and aiming for the hat-trick this weekend. After pulling out a victory of the Cowboys, the men from the shire comprehensively put the sword to a struggling Rabbitohs outfit last weekend.

The Panthers and Sharks know how much this game means in the context of the season and neither team will leave any petrol in the tank come full-time.

Panthers Team News

The Panthers have a mixed bag of changes leading into this clash after their shock loss to the Bulldogs.

James Maloney was suspended last weekend for tripping and will miss this weekend’s game. This is a big blow for the team even though they now get to blood a rookie five-eighth in Matt Burton as his replacement.

On a positive note for Penrith, the skillful monster in Viliame Kikau returns to the edge following a two-week suspension which will give the forward pack a much-needed boost.

Jarome Luai and Wayde Egan are both out with injuries with Sione Katoa and Spencer Leniu coming on to the interchange bench.

Sharks Team News

Cronulla has made a couple of changes to the team that thumped the Rabbitohs last weekend.

Matt Moylan has been ruled out with a concussion after the hit by Sam Burgess last weekend which sees Josh Dugan move back into the fullback role.

This is perfect time Sosaia Feki coming straight back into the starting line-up on the left-wing pushing Josh Morris back into the centres on the right-wing.

Andrew Fifita will once again start off the bench after his impact there last weekend was immense.

Panthers vs Sharks Head To Head

Cronulla will look to continue their dominance over the Panthers as they have in recent outings.

Since 1998 these two teams have played 36 times with the Sharks leading the count by a big margin 22 to 13 with 1 draw.

Recently, Cronulla holds the supremacy over the Panthers winning 12 times in the last 14 games.

Panthers vs Sharks Match Up

The match-up of the night must be the two halfbacks, Chad Townsend and Nathan Cleary.

Chad Townsend has come to play the last two weeks on the back of Shaun Johnson having a crack at the line. He was brilliant last week against the Rabbitohs and was able to organise the way he wanted with both Shaun Johnson and Wade Graham stepping up on their edges.

Nathan Cleary has a tough task to guide Penrith around without James Maloney who was pivotal during their seven-game winning streak. He will partner a rookie in Matt Burton who has been thrown in the deep-end with a big injury-list in the halves.

Cleary will need to have a big game to steer the Panthers to a victory.

Panthers vs Sharks Key Statistics

  • Cronulla has won seven of their last ten games in Penrith.
  • Penrith is the third worst attacking team in the NRL behind only Bulldogs and Titans.
  • Cronulla has won their last seven games against Penrith.

The Sharks should get the job done here.

One of the worst attacking teams in the Panthers just lost their key playmaker and is expected to put the points up against a Sharks team full of confidence. Cronulla could have a feeding frenzy if they turn up with the same intensity and attitude as last week.
