Broncos vs Panthers - Brisbane to pounce on Penrith

Brisbane and Penrith meet at Suncorp Stadium in what is an important game for both sides and our expert predicts this one to go down to the wire.

Broncos vs Panthers Preview, Predictions & Betting

Friday night football has a huge clash between two teams who are battling for the final spots inside the top eight.

Brisbane is chasing back-to-back wins after stealing victory in the dying stages of their clash with the Cowboys. The Broncos kept their season alive in a scrappy affair by scoring two tries in the final 16 minutes of play.

Penrith will be brimming with confidence following their home win over the Sharks.

The Panthers dominated the first half, outscoring the Sharks three tries to one. Debutant Matt Burton was dynamic as the Panthers orchestrated a near-perfect first half to bury the Sharks. Although they won’t be happy letting in three tries in 14 minutes in the second half, Penrith got the much needed two points to keep their finals hopes alive.

For the second week in a row the Panthers play another team in the hunt for a finals spot but this time they won’t get the comfy surrounds of home.

Broncos Team News

The Broncos has named the same 17 who pulled off the unlikely victory last weekend against the Cowboys.

Listed among the reserves are injured back-rowers Matt Gillett and Alex Glenn.

Both players will be monitored throughout the week and will given up until game-time to prove their fitness.

If they can both play, Brisbane will enhance their already powerful forward pack.

Panthers Team News

Penrith has made one official change to the team that manhandled the Sharks last Friday night with James Maloney returning to the team in place of the impressive Matt Burton.

The other two debutants from last week Stephen Crichton and Spencer Leniu have retained their spots in the line-up despite Dean Whare waiting in the wings.

Isaah Yeo will start at lock and Moses Leota back to the bench after being swapped around for this game.

Broncos vs Panthers Head To Head

Brisbane looks to continue their recent dominance over Penrith, going for their fourth-straight win against them.

Since 1998 these two teams have played 35 times with the Broncos leading the count by a big margin 22 to 12 with 1 draw.

Since their first match against one another in 1988, Brisbane has been hailed the winner 34 times out of the 56 matches played.

Over the past three times, these sides have met, Brisbane has not only won all three games but by an average margin of 17 points.

At Suncorp Stadium, the Broncos have won eight of the last ten times.

Broncos vs Panthers Match Up

The match-up of the night will be the two powerhouse props in Payne Haas and James Fisher-Harris.

Last weekend Payne Haas monstered the Cowboys forward pack who contained Jason Taumalolo, Josh McGuire and Matt Scott. Haas ran for an impressive 236 metres. the most in the game, and made 30 tackles. He sits third on the list in the NRL for post-contact metres with 1070 and averages just over 180m a game.

James Fisher-Harris is a defensive machine.

He sits third overall in the list for most tackles this season with 872, averaging just over 43 tackles a game. With that high workload, he can be forgiven for sitting fourth in the NRL for missed tackles with 82. Last week, Fisher-Harris led the Panthers from the front, topping the total runs metres with 188.

They will be targeting each-other throughout this contest, which is going to be mouth-watering viewing.

Broncos vs Panthers Key Statistics

•Brisbane averages just over 20 points a game at Suncorp Stadium this year
•Penrith averages just 14 points a game away from Penrith Stadium this year
•Penrith leads the league in missed tackles with 795, 62 more than the next team

The Broncos will use their home field advantage to win this battle in a close one.

Although both teams have been average when it comes to their attack, Brisbane has a slight edge in the defence which will be boosted with the home crowd in their ears. I am expecting their forwards to be too much for Penrith to handle but with a lot on the line, the Panthers will make sure they are in it until the final siren.
