Melbourne Storm vs Penrith Panthers Tips
Rarely have we been treated to a grand final the likes of which Penrith and Melbourne are set to produce on Sunday night.
The two standout teams in the league - led by the two dominant halfbacks - Nathan Cleary and Jahrome Hughes - has all the makings of a modern day classic.
Often over a long season, teams lose their way and drop out of the running.
But these have been the two best sides all season, finishing one and two on the ladder, and the bookies rightly see very little between them.
For me, Hughes has been the standout player in the NRL, playing 22 games for the Storm for 26 try assists.
Injury has somewhat hampered Cleary’s season, but his haul of 15 try assists from 12 games is also impressive.
However he will carry a ‘bung’ shoulder into the big game and is certain to be tested out by the Storm’s power forwards.
The Panthers will attempt to shield Cleary from doing too much defensive work - but Craig Bellamy - who may well be the best coach of all time with a win on Sunday - will find way to cause him pain.
The Storm will miss man-mountain Nelson Asofa Solomona - suspended for a high shot in the opening tackle against the Roosters last week - but Bellamy’s ‘next man up’ mentality will ensure the team doesn’t suffer too much.
I’m going for the Storm for one reason - their hooker Harry Grant has more attacking weapons in his arsenal than his opposite, Mitch Kenny.
Kenny is a good, tough defender up the middle, but Grant makes tries and scores tries.
After halfback, hooker is the most vital position on the field and with this clear edge, I can see the Storm ending Penrith’s wonderful run of three straight titles.
