North Queensland Cowboys vs Wests Tigers Tips

The Cowboys are looking like their 2022 selves again and unfortunately for the Tigers, so are they.

With two form curves swinging heavily in different directions there is only one result expected in Townsville and that is a heavy win for the home team, who will get revenge for their 48-point loss to the Tigers in round 12.

The Cowboys can cover the 13.5 points as favourites with ease by holding the Tigers UNDER 14 points. North Queensland’s left edge has really found its rhythm the last couple of games, so I’m taking Val Holmes as an anytime try scorer getting the best value on the left side.

  • The Cowboys have covered the spread in 6 of their last 7 games.
  • The Tigers have failed to cover the line in 3 of their last 5 games.
  • Wests have scored less than 14 points in 8 of 14 games in 2023.
  • North Queensland’s left edge has scored 8 tries in their last 2 games.

Head to Head

The Cowboys and the Tigers played in round 12 with Wests shocking North Queensland 66-18, tying the most points conceded in the club’s history.

A win for the Tigers against the Cowboys is not uncommon though, with Wests winning five of the last eight matches against North Queensland since 2019.

North Queensland Cowboys Form

The Northerners are starting to look like the team that made it to the preliminary finals last season, winning their last 3 games against top 8 sides Penrith, Melbourne and Souths.

Although they have met some of the top guns of the competition during a disrupted Origin period, it is how they have been winning that has everyone thinking that they may be returning to the form that took them a long way in the competition last year.

Tom Dearden and Scott Drinkwater are dictating their own terms on the field creating space for their electric outside backs to score points.

Todd Payton has stuck with last week’s side that got the job done against the Rabbitohs.

Jason Taumalolo is listed in the reserves and may be a late inclusion.

Wests Tigers Form

After a few good weeks that gave a glimmer of hope to Wests fans the light has now dimmed and it is looking like it will be another long and painful end to the Tigers’ season.

Key long-term injuries to Luke Brooks, Api Koroisau and Adam Doueihi have diminished their hopes of a fight for a top 8 spot with no playmaker in the side that can organise any type of threatening attack on the opposition's tryline.

Wests Tigers Team News

The Tigers will see two notable changes in their starting 17 with Stefano Utoikamanu, fresh from Origin duty, making a return to the team, while Daine Laurie takes up the five-eighth position in the starting lineup.

Fonua Pole moves to the bench, while Starford To'a shifts to the centres, and Asu Kepaoa joins the reserves.

Verdict

The Cowboys will get their vengeance on Saturday night, returning the favour of a 14 point or more win against the Tigers. Wests will have trouble scoring tries and will be held under a 15 point team total. Val Holmes will continue his try scoring form, crossing for another against the Tigers.
