Newcastle Knights vs Wests Tigers Tips

The amount of form reversal the Tigers need to produce to avoid another heavy defeat is too great in a week. The Knights dominate from start to finish, win by plenty and the total match points should hit overs.

  • Newcastle Knights have won their opening 2 matches this season.
  • Newcastle Knights have won their last 6 home matches.
  • Newcastle Knights have seen 48 points or more in their last 4 matches against Wests Tigers.
  • Over the match total has landed in 5 of the last 6 matches between Newcastle Knights and Wests Tigers.
  • Wests Tigers have lost their last 5 matches.
  • Wests Tigers have lost 6 of their last 7 away matches.
  • Wests Tigers have conceded an average of 37.2 points in their last 5 away matches.

Head-to-Head

There have been 30 games played between these two sides and both have won 15 games apiece. The Knights have scoring 54 points more than the Tigers in history.

Wests Tigers have won five of their last eight encounters with the Knights, however the last two games were won by Newcastle handsomely with a combined score of 86-28.

The Knights have had nine wins to the Tigers' eight in meetings at McDonald Jones Stadium.

Newcastle Knights Form

The Knights are looking to win their first three games of a season for the first time since 2015 and for just the sixth time in their history.

They are still a bit patchy at times in games, but nowhere near as bad as in previous seasons and are a genuine top eight side in 2021.

Newcastle got a comfortable enough start to the season, opening with wins over the Canterbury Bulldogs and the New Zealand Warriors.

They have also had a very kind travel schedule to start the season, with three of their first four games at home, and will be looking to make the most of that.

Newcastle Knights Team News

Edrick Lee (foot), Blake Green (knee) and Kalyn Ponga (shoulder) are all expected back over the next two weeks, but Lachlan Fitzgibbon is out indefinitely with his shoulder injury.

Phoenix Crossland copped a suspension which will keep him out of the side until Round 6.

Kurt Mann, who missed last week’s game with a knee complaint, has been cleared to play and will be available to face the Tigers. He has been named at five-eighth in place of Crossland.

Wests Tigers Form

Over their last five Premiership games, the Tigers are conceding almost twice as many points as they are scoring and that is a recipe for disaster.

Wests have won just two of their last 12 games, and have conceded an average of 33 points per game in the process.

They opened their 2021 campaign with a 30-12 loss to Canberra Raiders, in a game where they were right in it at halftime on to fall apart after the break.

Last week they were thumped by the Sydney Roosters, conceding seven tries in a 40-6 loss. They currently have the second worst attack and second worst defence after two games.

Wests Tigers Team News

Billy Walters and Shawn Blore are both sidelined with their injuries until Round 7.

This week, though, will see the return of Zane Musgrove, who has finished serving his suspension, and James Roberts, who had a shoulder niggle that saw him miss last weekend's game.

Roberts replaces Joey Leilua, who has been dropped after a poor start to the year. Musgrove moves into the front row in the run-on side, pushing Joe Ofahengaue to the bench and Michael CHee-Kam out of the 17.

Verdict

Newcastle have now won their last six straight games at McDonald Jones Stadium and they are a much tougher team to beat on home soil. The Knights attack is looking very good despite being without attacking x-factor Kalyn Ponga, and they are tipped to be much too good for Wests Tigers.
