Newcastle Knights vs New Zealand Warriors, Round 9 2024 - Expert Prediction

The New Zealand Warriors have suffered two straight embarrassing losses but they will bounce back with the return of a couple of key men this week which will boost their attack against the Knights, who also have creativity problems of their own.

The return of Kurt Capewell will give the Warriors another dimension in attack with the hard-running second-rower giving the Knights defence something more to think about than the right side of the offensive line. The Warriors would have had a hard week on the training paddock with their own defence the number one priority, so it is expected that they will contain the Ponga-less Newcastle attack.

Addin Fonua Blake crashed over for a double last week and with such good odds for the prop-forward you have to ride him over while the going is hot.

  • New Zealand has won 3 of their past 4 games against Newcastle.
  • The Knights average 17.3 points per game which is 14th in the NRL
  • Newcastle concede the second-most Run Metres (1534.5) of any team in the NRL.
  • Addin Fonua-Blake has scored 4 tries in 8 games this season
  • The Knights 32% of their tries in the middle of the field.

Head to Head

It was a tight one between the Knights and the Warriors in round 4, 2024, with the New Zealanders getting up 20-12 as both defensive units stood up and absorbed plenty of pressure on their own line.

The victory for the Warriors was their third in 4 games against Newcastle, however, the Knights hold a slim 6-5 lead in the head to head record since the 2019 season.

The Knights got a grinding win against the Dolphins last weekend, beating the NRL second-yearers 18-14. Newcastle were without marquee fullback Kalyn Ponga and it really showed, struggling to find creativity in attack and take advantage of the 33 tackles they had in the Dolphins 20m.

Without Ponga in the team the Knights need to find their spark in attack, but for the time being it will be their defence that they will need to rely on. Their commitment without the ball was what put them on such a run at the end of last season and they will need to find the same stature in their defensive line if they are to compete without Ponga lighting it up in attack.

The stage was set for an emphatic display for the Warriors on Anzac Day but they fell miserably to the Gold Coast Titans, who got their first win of the season 27-24.

The Warriors controlled 69% of the territory against the Titans and had 42 tackles inside the Gold Coast 20m. The Gold Coast hung on desperately throughout the whole match, conceding just 2 tries in 72 minutes of footy, after going down 12-0 in the opening stages of the match.

What that says about the Gold Coast’s defence could also be said about the predictability of the Warriors attack which the titans were able to contain, despite being one of the worst defensive teams in the NRL in 2024.

New Zealand Warriors Team News

Kurt Capewell returns to the starting side in a huge boost for the Warriors this week, who will also get Bunty Afoa back on the bench. Paul Roache and Zyon Maiu'u drop out of the side and Jacob Laban returns to the interchange bench.
