Newcastle Knights vs Canterbury Bulldogs Tips

Newcastle are powering home with five wins on the trot and will be looking to extend that streak to six, for the first time since 2019, when they face the Bulldogs at McDonald Jones Stadium.

The Doggies are fresh off the bye and will be hoping the extra week's rest will give them the energy required to secure their safety from the 2023 wooden spoon.

No one is expecting another 66-point victory to Newcastle, but in my opinion 9.5 points as favourites is being a bit kind to Canterbury, so I’ll be backing Newcastle to cover.

The Knights have been electric in attack in the last 5 games on the back of Ponga prowess, so I see them reaching a Team Total of at least 28 points.

Enari Tuala will fill the boots of Bradman Best in the centres and I am backing the Knights to terrorise the right defence of the Bulldogs again, as they did in round 18.

  • The Knights have won by 10+ points in 4 of their last 5 victories against the Bulldogs
  • Canterbury have covered the line in only 1 of 4 games when starting as underdogs between 6-10 points.
  • Canterbury have conceded at least 28 points in 6 of their last 7 games.
  • The Knights have scored 28 points or more in 4 of their last 5 games.
  • The Knights left edge scored 5 tries against the Bulldogs in round 18, 2023

Head to Head

The Knights and the Bulldogs met as recently as round 18 when Newcastle embarrassed Canterbury 66-0, which was their biggest victory in the club’s long history.

The Knights have also won five of the last eight since 2019, winning by double-digit margins in four of those victories.

Newcastle Knights Form

The Knights have won 5 in a row for the first time since the end of the 2021 season, after surviving a tough encounter against the Dolphins in Perth.

The 30-28 victory was once again orchestrated by the attacking prowess of Kalyn Ponga, who is arguably in the best form of his career. Since switching back to fullback, Ponga has had 16 Try Involvements and 31 Linebreak Involvements while averaging 180 Run Metres per game (stats via @randomstatsguy).
