Newcastle Knights vs Canberra Raiders Tips

This matchup between the Newcastle Knights and Canberra Raiders is 5th v 8th, but it feels more like 1st vs 8th when you compare the form trajectory. The Knights look like the smokey to win the comp while the Raiders are quite frankly lucky to be still playing footy.

The Raiders have played in 17 matches in 2023 that have been decided by a margin of 1-12, this is not one of them. The Knights cover the line 75% of the time at home and they will add to that statistic in the first week of the finals.

The team total for the Knights is also a little low considering how clinical Newcastle’s attack has been over the past nine games, so I am expecting them to score over 27.5 points on Sunday.

Bradman Best presents the best value on the left side of Newcastle's attack at 2.30 odds, so the NSW centre is my pick for an ATS.

  • The Knights have covered the line in 75% of their games played at home in 2023.
  • The Knights have averaged 33 points in attack in their last 5 games.
  • The Knights have scored more than 27.5 points in their last 6 matches.
  • Bradman best has 3 tries in his last 3 games.

Head to Head

With almost an even amount of possession, Newcastle managed to rack up 549 more run metres than Canberra in their 28-6 victory in round 22.

The win reiterated the Knights' 24-14 victory they had over the Raiders in round 4, to complete the 2023 whitewash.

Newcastle Knights Form

I don’t think there was a single person in the country who would have predicted that the Newcastle Knights would be the in-form team of the NRL heading into the 2023 NRL Finals.

Obviously, the form of fullback Kalyn Ponga has plenty to do with it, but the Knights's 32-12 victory against the Dragons, without Ponga, must have also turned plenty of heads last week.

Newcastle are scintillating in attack but they have also only allowed two tries or less against in six of their games during their nine-game win streak.

Canberra Raiders Form

Canberra haven’t been good in the last two months, that is plain and simple. The Raiders have only recorded two wins in their last seven games, which was against the two of league’s three worst.

The Raiders' -137 differential speaks a thousand words. Teams are putting points on Canberra, while they are failing to cross the line, nothing more needs to be said.

James Schiller will replace Sebastian Kris on the wing after being suspended for his dangerous tackle in round 27.
