New Zealand Warriors vs St George Illawarra Dragons Tips

New Zealand Warriors attempt to extend their win streak to seven games when they face off against the St George Illawarra Dragons. The Warriors have been a little unpolished in the last few weeks, while the Dragons blew a double-digit lead against Melbourne last week.

The trend of the Dragons covering is where the money should lie this week, but I am expecting a change of fortune for St George and a shift in form from the Warriors.

The Wahs beat the Dragons comfortably in round 17 and I am predicting a similar story this week with New Zealand covering as 16.5-point favourites. The Dragons will come out with energy though and that is why I am backing them to score over 6.5 points in the first half.

I am getting on Dallin Watene Zelezniak to score multiple tries again against the weakest left-side defence in the comp.

  • The Warriors have won 6 games from 8 at Go Media Stadium in 2023.
  • 2 of the last 3 Warriors wins at Go Media have been by a margin larger than 16.5 points.
  • The Dragons have scored more than 6.5 points in the first half in 4 of their last 5 matches..
  • Dallin Watene Zelezniak leads the league with 21 tries and score 4 against the Dragons last time out.

Head to Head

The Warriors took care of the Dragons easily in round 17, winning by 30 and Dallin Watene-Zelezniak scoring four tries.

The Dragons had won the previous three meetings between themselves and New Zealand, but the round 17 win has given the Warriors the edge head-to-head 4-3 since 2019.

New Zealand Warriors Form

The Warriors have won six straight, grinding out their last three wins against inferior opposition.

They most recently got the job done against Manly 29-22 in unconvincing fashion once again, as they did against the Tigers and the Titans the previous two weeks.

The Warriors are starting to be compared to the 2002 minor premiership-winning team, but they have a long way to go before I jump on that bandwagon, needing to get more victories against top contenders before I’m screaming ‘Up the Wahs’!

St George Dragons Form

It feels like these form write-ups for the Dragons are on repeat talking about another game where they had the match by the horns and lost grip when it mattered.

St George had the Melbourne Storm on the ropes in the first half but let a 14-point lead diminish before the break and went down 28-38.

The only positive is that they covered the 14.5 point line as underdogs, beating the handicap for the fourth game in succession.

Verdict

The Warriors will win comfortably in the end by a margin larger than 16.5 points, however, the Dragons will come out firing scoring more than 6.5 points in the first half. Dallin Watene Zelezniak will be gunning for the try scoring title in 2023 so he will cross for multiple tries.
