New Zealand Warriors vs South Sydney Rabbitohs Tips

This is a tough game to pick. The Warriors are in stunning form right now with the ball, whilst the Rabbits defence seems to have disappeared since round 11.

With that said the Bunnies have an outstanding record against the Warriors and always seem to get up for this game. Shaun Johnson has given us magic these past two weeks so I am going back to the well and tipping him to get his Warriors over the line at home taking the total OVER as well.

  • The Warriors are 12-3 ATS this season, the best record in the NRL (5-2 at home)
  • The last 6 games straight between these two teams has gone OVER the points total.
  • 10 of 15 Warriors games and 8 of 16 Souths games in 2023 have finished with margins of 12 points or less.
  • Shaun Johnson has individually scored 4 tries & 22 goals, 5 try assists & 3 linebreaks combined over his last 3 games.

Head to Head

The Head to Head stats between the Rabbitohs and Warriors could not possibly be more lopsided.

South Sydney have won 13 of the last 14 games against New Zealand with the Warriors' last win coming in round 1 of the 2018 season.

Souths have since won seven games on the trot with an average winning margin of 21.5 points across all games.

New Zealand Warriors Form

The Warriors have won four of their last five games with two byes stuck in the middle. They have recaptured their early-season attacking form posting an average of 38 points over their last three games.

Dallin Watene-Zelezniak has scored 10 tries in New Zealand’s last 5 games, with Shaun Johnson scoring 60 points (4 tries, 22 goals) across the same period.

New Zealand Warriors Team News

Two changes this week for the Warriors with Mitch Barnett returning from suspension to take his place on the bench.

Josh Curran moves to the starting side with Marata Niukore being rubbed out for 3 weeks for a high shot.

South Sydney Rabbitohs Form

The Rabbitohs have now suffered two consecutive defeats at the hands of less than impressive opponents in the Dragons and Cowboys.

South’s defence, which for much of the season was the benchmark of the NRL, did not allow any opposition team to score over 20 points in their first 11 games.

In the five games played since then, every single opponent has scored 28 or more points at an average of 32.8 points per game.

South Sydney have lost the run metres battle in their last two games with a combined total of 3904-3252.

Shaq Mitchell and Siliva Havili are back on the bench for the Rabbits with Jed Cartwright and Peter Mamouzelos dropping out.

Michael Chee Kam replaces Jacob Host in the run-on side with the second rower receiving a suspension for a shoulder charge.

Verdict

Souths have had the Warriors in all sorts over the past 10 years but this year things are different. Shaun Johnson is a man remade, Dallin Watene-Zelezniak is scoring all over the park and the resolve of a once tired New Zealand team is at the forefront.

The Rabbits are struggling with injury and their defence has collapsed. The Warriors are tipped to break their hoodoo this week and Johnson will again feature heavily.
