New Zealand Warriors vs Newcastle Knights Tips

The New Zealand Warriors are tipped to get their second win of the season when they continue their recent dominance over the Newcastle Knights at home in New Zealand.

The Warriors beat the Knights twice when playing across the Tasman in 2023, with one of their wins knocking Newcastle out of the 2023 NRL Finals Series. A similar result is expected again, however, maybe not to the extent of a 30-point win though.

The Warriors lost a couple of real close games before bagging their first win of the season last week and they will now go on a run with a couple of wins at home to steady their year.

Newcastle have not looked like their 2023 selves this season, despite scrapping past and under-manned Melbourne last week. Until the Knights can settle on some key combinations, I think we can expect a mixed bag of performances out of the Hunter.

The Warriors go-forward is going to be too vicious for Newcastle, who will likely spend most of the game playing out of their own end. The 8.5-point line in favour of the Warriors is slightly uncomfortable as we have not seen the best of their attack yet, but we should see it this week so I am going to jump on it.

The Warriors will be focusing heavily on their defence this week and containing Kalyn Ponga, who is struggling already at the moment. The Game Total is at 40.5 which I suspect will hit the Under.

Roger Tuivasa-Sheck is slotting in at fullback this week for the Warriors and I suspect he will be uncontainable there for the Knights with the dual-international crossing for a try.

  • New Zealand has won 7 of their past 8 games against Newcastle at GoMedia Stadium.
  • 5 of 6 games involving either New Zealand or Newcastle have hit the Under in 2024.
  • 6 of the last 8 games between Newcaste and New Zealand have hit the Under.
  • Newcastle has conceded a try to opposing fullbacks in 2 of their 3 games this season.

Head to Head

The Warriors and Knights faced each other three times last season with the home team getting up on all occasions.

The most recent match between the two was in the 2023 Finals Series, when New Zealand trounced Newcastle 40-10, giving them no room to breath at Go Media Stadium.

Newcastle won 34-24 at McDonald Jones Stadium in round 6, while the Warriors got up 20-12 in round 1, 2023.

New Zealand Warriors Form

The Warriors got their first win of the season in round 3, holding off the Raiders for an 18-10 victory in New Zealand last Friday night.

The Warriors suffered a heartbreaking loss to the Storm 30-26 in round 2 and were also beaten by the Sharks 16-12.

The Warriors engine room has been leading the way for them in 2024 and could have been on the right side of the first two losses, just as easily as they suffered defeat.

New Zealand are ranked third in the NRL with an average of 1,484 Run Metres and also third in opposition Run Metres at 1,297.3

New Zealand Warriors Team News

Roger Tuivasa-Sheck will replace Taine Tuaupiki at fullback with Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad still a week away from returning.

Wayde Egan will return from his concussion this week with Freddy Lussick dropping out.

Marata Niukore and Dylan Walker will return with Jazz Tevaga and Tom Ale dropping out.

Newcastle Knights Form

Newcastle ran into the Melbourne Storm just at the right time while they were suffering injuries to both Jahrome Hughes and Cam Munster, which helped their cause immensely in their 14-12 win.

The Knights had lost both games in round 1 and 2, going down 21-20 against the Cowboys and 28-12 against the Raiders.

The Knights are not showing the flashiness that they had at the end of the 2023 season just yet and it is hard to get a real read on them at the moment after a few mixed performances.

Kalyn Ponga has been quiet for them recording just 1 Try Assist and 1 Linebreak Assist in three games so far this season.

Newcastle Knights Team News

Jack Cogger holds his spot at halfback after the Knights first win.

Leo Thompson has been suspended for one week with Daniel Saifit starting alongside his brother in the frontrow.
