New Zealand Warriors vs Cronulla Sharks Preview

Definitely the game of the round at Go Media Stadium between the Warriors and the Sharks. It was an incredible 20-point comeback from New Zealand in round 5 which saw them get the two points against the Sharks in Cronulla.

The Shire boys will be looking for revenge this week and should strike back to get their first win against a top 8 side all season.

The models are pointing to a draw so I am going to throw a unit on that, especially after the tie being broken in the 79th minute last time these two teams met. Neither team has been good against top sides this season and surprisingly the Warriors have not been good at home lately and the Sharks have been good away.

I’m predicting that this game will be more of a defensive battle than expected and with such a high Game Points Total, I am taking the UNDER. Mulitalo scored a double in round 5 and will have success on the left wing.

  • New Zealand have lost their last 11 games against top 4 sides.
  • Cronulla have won 7 of their last 10 against New Zealand.
  • 7 of 8 Warriors home games have gone UNDER the Total Game Points
  • The Warriors have conceded 45% of their tries on the right side of their defence.

Head to Head

The Warriors and the Sharks have met each other twice each year the last four years with Cronulla winning the head-to-head battle commandingly, with six wins from nine games since 2019.

The Warriors edged out the Sharks in a final-minute thriller at PointsBet Stadium in round 5, coming back from a 6-26 deficit midway through the first half. Shaun Johnson won the match with a 79th minute penalty goal to seal it 32-30 to the visitors.

New Zealand Warriors Form

After a short dip in form after a blistering start to the season, the Warriors are back on the train and are shaping up to be a finals contender in 2023.

The New Zealanders have won four of their last five games, once again becoming a defensive force like they were at the beginning of the season. The Warriors are averaging just 15 points against in their last five games, which certainly sets the tone for their victories.

New Zealand Warriors Team News

Josh Curran makes a comeback to the team after serving a two-game suspension. He will take his place in the second row, causing Mitch Barnett to move to the prop position.

Bunty Afoa won't be available, however, Dylan Walker has been included in the squad, despite sustaining an arm injury in the previous match.

Cronulla Sharks Form

Cronulla have won three straight, but before you get too excited, it was against the league’s three wooden spoon contenders, the Tigers, Dragons and Bulldogs.

The Sharks certainly have not had trouble picking apart the weaker defence in the last 3 games, averaging a mammoth 45 points per game.

Nicho Hynes has of course been the catalyst of Cronulla’s attack with 8 Linebreak Assists and 8 Try Assists under that period.

Cronulla Sharks Team News

Cronulla is fielding an unchanged 17-player lineup that secured victory against the Wests Tigers in their previous match.

However, there is a chance for a late addition, as Braden Hamlin-Uele has been listed in the reserves and could potentially join the team if he recovers from his rib injury.

This is going to be a cracking game that will prove the worth of these two teams and their finals contention. The draw is possible but I see the Sharks getting up.

For either team to win they are going to have to put in a monstrous defensive effort, that’s why I like the UNDER Points Total.

Mulitalo has been unstoppable and had a great night out against the Warriors in Round 5, so he’ll go over for a try for sure.
