New Zealand Warriors vs Canberra Raiders Tips

New Zealand will play host to Canberra in Auckland for the early Friday game. The Warriors have won five of their last six games including a 36-14 win over the Raiders in round 15.

In a general sense, the return games are almost always closer but with the Warriors in such good form they will have no trouble getting the double against Canberra this year.

  • New Zealand are 6-3 ATS at home this year, leading the NRL.
  • The Warriors were able to put 36 points on the Raiders in round 15 despite having 2 players in the Sin Bin during the game.
  • New Zealand are averaging 40.8 points in their last 5 wins.
  • Canberra have allowed an average of 24.5 points to their opposition across their last 6 games.
  • Marcelo Montoya has scored 4 tries in his past 4 games and lines up opposite the Raiders edge which allows 38% of their opposition tries.

Head to Head

The Warriors and Raiders have met nine times since the beginning of the 2019 season. Canberra have the slight edge 5-4 in those games but the Warriors have won two of the last three, including the match-up earlier this year which finished 36-14 to the New Zealanders.

Interestingly, the away team has won six of the previous nine games in this head to head.

New Zealand Warriors Form

The Warriors staked their top 8 claim last week feeding the Sharks to…well, the Sharks. The 44-12 scoreline was the Sharks second biggest defeat of the season and solidified New Zealand as a genuine top 4 competitor.

The New Zealand wing duo of Dallin Watene-Zelezniak and Marcelo Montoya have scored 23 tries so far in 2023 top 3 in the league.

Marata Niukore is back from suspension with Bunty Afoa also taking his place in the starting side after injury.

With those two coming back, Mitch Barnett and Tom Ale revert to the interchange with Josh Curran and Bayley Sironen dropping to the reserves.

The Raiders only loss going back to round 13 was to the Warriors at home in round 15 in a game where they lost the run metres and linebreaks battle.

Verdict

As mentioned the second match up of the season between two teams is generally a closer affair but with the Warriors in such great attacking form I have trouble seeing how the Raiders defence can hold them out. Warriors to win big taking the total over and Montoya to be amongst the tryscorers!
