New Zealand’s title defence fell to tatters in their loss to Tonga last week and it will be a big ask for Stacey Jones’ men to lift themselves up and put in a dominant performance over PNG, who are flying high like the birds of paradise, full of confidence and are hungary for an upset.

The work of the PNG back-five has put them in great field position and opened up opportunities for their attack. If they can win the territory battle against the Kiwis they will give themselves a chance of a few tries against a New Zealand defence that has been sloppy so far in the Pacific Championships.

Expect Nene MacDonald to continue to orchestrate the attack of the Kumuls and cross for his fourth try of the tournament and give PNG a fighting chance of promotion.

  • New Zealand have conceded an average of 23.5 points in two matches.
  • New Zealand have lost the linebreak count 6-12 over their two matches.
  • The PNG back-five have average 164 run metres per player over two matches.
  • Nene Macdonald has 3 tries in two games.

Head to Head

The last time New Zealand and PNG met was in the 2013 World Cup with the Kiwis running away 56-10, in Leeds.

From as far back as 1971 the head to head record is heavily in the favour of New Zealand, winning 19 of 20 matches.

The Kumuls have not beaten New Zealand since the World Cup in 1986, where they won 24-22 in Port Moseby.

New Zealand Kiwis Form Analysis

I don’t think we expected the Kiwis for would dip as bad as it has, despite them missing some key players in the Pacific Championships, but here they are in the promotion / Relegation match after losing to Tonga last week.

New Zealand fell behind after two minutes against Tonga and before the half they were staring down a 24-0 scoreline before snagging a late try before the break. Credit to them they clawed their way back, however a missed penalty goal and two missed field goals saw the end of the Kiwi title defence.

Creativity has been one of aspects of the New Zealand game which has come under criticism, creating just 6 linebreaks in their two matches while conceding twice as many. The Kiwis have also been falling of tackles losing the missed tackle count in both matches with a combined total of  86-62.

PNG Kumuls Form Analysis

The Kumuls powered themselves into the promotion match with two impressive wins, the first a 22-10 victory over Fiji, coming into the match as heavy underdogs They then backed it up with a strong attacking performance against the Cook Islands, beating the Aitu 42-20.

Despite not being filled with the masses of NRL talent the Kumuls have been electric in attack, scoring an average of 32 points in their matches. Nene MacDonald has been in the thick of it all at Fullback with 3 tries, 4 linebreaks, 2 linebreak assists and 2 try assists in two matches.

The key statistic for PNG is that they have been able to control the territory in both of their matches with an average of 55% of the field position. In both matches the back 5 have been doing a lot of the heavy lifting for their forwards with each player running for over 100 metres in each match an an average of 164 metres per player over the two games.

PNG Kumuls Team News

The only change for PNG is the return of skipper and goal kicker Rhyse Martin who missed their match against the Cook Islands due to personal reasons. Dan Russell was his replacement and moves back to being the Kumuls 18th man.
