Melbourne Storm vs South Sydney Rabbitohs, Round 8 2024 - Expert Prediction

Anzac Day will have a new look with the Storm’s usual opponent the New Zealand Warriors hosting their own game this season with Melbourne taking on the South Sydney Rabbitohs in 2024. The Storm have been winning nail biters this season and I am suspecting another with the Rabbitohs to cover the 12.5-point line as the underdog.

The Rabbitohs are coming off the bye and I believe the week off is going to have a real positive effect on the club, who have been able to dodge the limelight for a couple of weeks heading into this contest with the Storm. I am far from calling it a Rabbits win, with their record at AAMI Park as bad as it can be at 0-11, but I do expect them to make a game of it at least, especially considering the current form of Melbourne’s attack.

The South defence has been under question since halfway through last season, but the Storm attack has not been firing as well as we have come accustomed to which should mean that this game will stay close and the trend of 1-12 margins in Melbourne’s games this season will likely continue.

I think we can expect a more of a grinding battle between these two clubs, who will have defence as their main focus in this one and playing percentage footy and focusing on controlling the field position which will slow down the scoring and follow the trend of the Under on the Game Total.

Xavier coates has gone to another level for the Storm this season and has been involved in all the clutch moments for Melbourne this season. His record is incredible for the the Storm at AAMI Park and he will cross for a try against Souths.

  • 5 of the past 7 matches between the Storm and the Rabbitohs has ended by a margin of 1-12.
  • Both the Storm (19.7) and the Rabbits (15.7) are averaging less than 20 points per game this season.
  • The past 4 games between Melbourne and South Sydney has gone Under the Game Total.
  • Xavier Coates has scored 13 tries in his last 13 regular season games at AAMI Park.

Head to Head

After a seven-game dominance of Melbourne from 2018 to 2022, South Sydney have now won two of the past three matches against the Storm, with the teams trading blows last season.

The Storm got an 18-10 victory in round 5 with the Rabbits biting back 28-12 in Magic Round last season.

The Storm are becoming the masters of close finishes with another 6-point victory over the Roosters which takes their record to 5-1 with every game being decided by a 1-12 margin this season.

That stat really highlights how Melbourne are going this season and for me it is a negative trend on their form from last year. The Storm won 16 games last season with exactly half of them being by 1-12. We have come to expect more from the Storm, especially in attack, which has not been as clinical this season, averaging just 19.66 points per game compared with the 26.12 points per game in 2023.

Melbourne Storm Team News

An unchanged 17 for the Storm but Nelson Asofa-Solomona has been named to start with Christian Welch coming off the bench.

What can we expect from Souths after their bye week? Their start to the season has been one of their worst and were lucky to even have a win on the board after 7 rounds of footy.

Fingers are getting pointed all over the place but each and every member of the organisation needs to look at all the fingers pointing back at themselves and it is going to take individual efforts to bring this group back together.

Defensive effort is obviously at the top of the list for South, who concede the most points per game than any other club in the NRL, allowing their opposition to score 32.7 points per game.

South Sydney Rabbitohs Team News

In major news for Supercoaches Jacob Gagai returns to the wing in place of Tyrone Munro who is out through injury. Tevita Tatola is also missing from this game with Shaw Mitchell coming into the run-on side. Damien Cook has earned a recall with Peter Mamouzelos reverting to the bench.

Jai Arrow also makes his return via the interchange after an injury layoff.
