Melbourne Storm vs Parramatta Eels Tips

The Storm were left shellshocked up in Newcastle last week as were the Eels in Townsville. Both teams will be looking to turn their form around on Friday night in a repeat of the opening NRL match of 2023.

Although the Storm snuck home in extra-time in Round 1 against the Eels, it is Parramatta who have had the upper hand against Melbourne recently.

I am predicting that the Eels will have no trouble covering the 7.5 points as underdogs, continuing their fine form with the ball and scoring more than three converted tries.

Melbourne’s right side of their defensive line has been having trouble in recent weeks, so a try by Sean Russell on the wing is my Anytime Try Scorer.

  • The Storm have lost their last 2 Friday night games, while the Eels have won their last 3.
  • The Eels have won 4 of their last 5 against Melbourne, their only loss in Rd 1 in 2023 in extra-time.
  • The Eels have averaged 26.6 points in attack in their last 5 games.
  • Melbourne have leaked 5 tries in their last 2 games down their right side.

Head to Head

Parramatta have won four of their last five against Melbourne, including their last meeting in Melbourne 28-24 in Round 3 last year.

In their first meeting of 2023, in Round 1, it was Harry Grant that was the hero scoring a try in extra-time for Melbourne after four missed field goals during the last 10 mins of the match and golden-point.

Melbourne Storm Form

After surviving the Origin period pretty well, Melbourne have not been their usual selves putting in three ordinary performances over the last few weeks.

They have failed to find any real chemistry in attack, which is what we have grown to expect from the likes of Jahrome Hughes and Cameron Munster.

Even though they did get the victory against the Roosters two weeks ago, Melbourne have failed to win the battle in the middle in their last three games, recording fewer Total Run Metres and fewer Linebreaks than all 3 of their opponents during their matches.

Also to note is that the Storm have lost their last two games when playing at Marvel Stadium.

Melbourne Storm Team News

Melbourne faces some significant absences after their disappointing loss to the Knights, as Reimis Smith (adductor) and Justin Olam make way in the centres, replaced by Young Tonumaipea and Marion Seve.

Nelson Asofa-Solomona, dealing with a finger injury from the Newcastle game, won't be playing, and Tom Eisenhuth takes his place in the back row.

Additionally, Tariq Sims will be absent for two weeks due to suspension, but the return of Eli Katoa to the interchange provides some consolation.

Parramatta Eels Form

Since round 12 Parramatta have been on a push towards the top 8, reaching the top half of the table after their victory against the Titans in round 20.

However, after two losses in their last three matches they are on the verge of slipping out again.

Parramatta Eels Team News

Shaun Lane's injury setback continues with a dislocated elbow suffered in Round 21, likely keeping him sidelined once again. As a result, Andrew Davey takes his place in the starting 13.

The newly acquired Joey Lussick makes his debut on the bench after returning from St Helens.

Verdict

The Eels attack will be too much for Melbourne who have been struggling recently and will score over 17 points keeping the game close.

Sean Russell will get over for a four-pointer, taking advantage of the troubles Melbourne have been having on the right side of their defensive line.
