Melbourne Storm vs Gold Coast Titans Preview

Melbourne will be looking to put in a much better performance than they did against the Dragons last week when they host the Gold Coast Titans at AAMI Park on Saturday afternoon.

Melbourne have been mostly ‘up’ lately but have had moments of really poor form in 2023 and last week was one of them, however a good spray from coach Bellamy generally turns things around quick-smart.

If I have learnt anything in my lifetime watching the Storm is that they do not often have two poor performances in consecutive weeks and unfortunately for the Titans they are going to end up on the wrong side of a hiding.

I am taking the Storm as 18.5-point favourites and that they will score over 33 points in the match. The Titans have had trouble defending back rowers so I like the inform Eliese Katoa for a four-pointer.

  • Melbourne have had an average winning margin of 36 points in their last 7 victories.
  • Melbourne have scored more than 30 points in their last 3 games that they have won.
  • Melbourne have scored over 30 points in 5 of their last 7 games against the Titans.
  • The Titans have conceded 9 tries to back-rowers in their last 6 games.

Head to Head

The Titans got the better of the Storm 38-34 back in round 3, in a real uncharacteristic shootout between the two clubs.

Not that I am a big fan of looking at Completion Rate to tell a story in an NRL match, however Melbourne fired at just 63% during the match and there are not many clubs that will win with a stat like that.

The Melbourne Storm had won the previous eight matches prior to their loss to the Titans in round 3.

Melbourne Storm Form

After holding Canberra tryless two weeks ago all signs were pointing up for the Storm, but Melbourne couldn’t back up their defensive effort the following week, getting pegged back by cellar dwellers the St George Dragons, almost losing the game and losing their spot in the top-4.

Melbourne were down by 14 points midway through the first half last week against the Dragons allowing them to score 18 points by the 24th minute of the match.

The Saints put on another 10 in the second half but lucky for Melbourne the Dragon's defence is, well woeful. The Storm took the victory 38-28 and a lot of questions are being asked again.

Gold Coast Titans Form

The Titans put in a solid effort against the premiers Penrith last week, keeping the game in the balance for 60 minutes, however, three tries from the Panthers in the final 15 minutes blew the scoreline out.

It was once again Jayden Campbell causing problems and it was no coincidence that when he limped off with a knee injury the Titans never looked dangerous again and the Panthers took advantage.

Gold Coast Titans Team News

Kieran Foran comes back from a sternum injury replacing Jayden Campbell who will be out for the year.

Jojo Fifita comes back in for Philip Sami who is also out for the next two weeks.

After a Bellamy spray because of last week’s performance the Melbourne Storm will come out firing beating the Titans by more than 18 points and will score over 33 points themselves. Eliesa Katoa will back up his two try effort last week with another against the Titans.
