Melbourne Storm vs Dolphins, Round 25 2024 - Expert Prediction

The Storm will likely wrap up the minor premiership on Saturday, however, the line at 15.5 in favour of Melbourne is a little large with the two mastermind coaches of Craig Bellamy and Wayne Bennett going head to head.

The Storm and the Dolphins played two very tight matches last season and I expect it to be a similar story this weekend as well. All of the numbers are little inflated in favour of the Storm including their team total of 32.5 which they haven't reached 5 matches and only 6 times this season.

Melbourne are back playing more percentage footy and are not taking the risks they were earlier in the season. Expect them to pin the ball in the Dolphins end and make them work it out. The Dolphins have been able to put up points themselves this year and that will help close the gap on the line, keeping the margin around the 10-point mark.

Jamayne Isaako has a good tryscoring record against Melbourne and will be matched up against Tyran Wishart who does not often play on the wing, so expect the Dolphin flyer to cross.

  • Melbourne’s largest winning margin against the Dolphins was 8 points in their two matches last season.
  • The Dolphins average losing margin is just 9.9 points this season.
  • The Dolphins have conceded over 30 points just 3 times this season.
  • Jamayne Isaako has scored 3 tries in his past 2 games against Melbourne.

Head to Head

Melbourne won both matches against the Dolphins in their inaugural season, getting a 24-16 victory in Magic round followed by another 30-24 win also played at Suncorp Stadium.

After edging out the Penrith Panthers in a 24-22 victory at BlueBet Stadium the Melbourne Storm can wrap up the minor Premiership with a win this week over the Dolphins.

Getting their second win over the three-peat champions Penrith was a real confidence building performance. Cameron Munster played his best footy of the season with a strong running game which saw the Storm get the early lead and put all the pressure on the Panthers.

The Storm have now won 9 of their past 10 matches and have been very strong on the defensive front over the past 7 weeks, averaging just 16 points a game against. With their spine finally getting some gametime together the Melbourne Storm are easily favourites in my opinion heading into September.

The Dolphins hung in with Canterbury for as long as they could but eventually ran out of gas with the Bulldogs running in a couple of late tries to put the match out of reach 30-10 with just under 15 minutes left.

The Dolphins played 66% of the match in their own half and were constantly moving the ball out of their own end which eventually hurt them later in the game.

The loss adds to a poor second half of the season for the Dolphins who have lost 8 of their past 11 matches and now have them sitting in ninth on the ladder, two points out of the eight.

The Dolphins are a top six attacking side, however, they have a scoring differential of exactly 0 conceding 25 points per game and scoring just as many on average.

Verdict

The numbers are a little large in favour of the Storm so back the Dolphins to cover and for Melbourne to score under 32.5, despite them likely winning the game.

Jamayne Isaako has 3 tries in 2 games against the Storm and will get a fourth.
