Melbourne Storm vs Canberra Raiders Tips

There is a lot on the line between Melbourne and Canberra when two Raiders greats go head-to-head in the coach's box. The winner will stay intact with the NRL leaders occupying 4th place and take command in the race for a second life in the finals.

I am predicting that this game will hold to the trends between these two clubs with the result to either team by a margin of 1-12. Both coaches will be expecting better defensive performances from their teams which will result in the UNDER hitting in regards to the Total Points in the match.

Xavier Coates scored a hat-trick in Melbourne's loss to Canberra in the prelim last year, which will be exploited again by Craig Bellamy.

  • 3 of the last 4 games between the Storm and the Raiders has resulted in a margin of 1-12.
  • 75% of all wins by the Storm and the Raiders have been by a margin of 1-12 in 2023.
  • 8 of 11 games between the Storm and the Raiders have gone UNDER 43.5 points.
  • Xavier Coates scored 3 tries against Canberra last time they met.

Head to Head

The Canberra Raiders proved to be a real bogey for the Melbourne Storm in 2022. Canberra defeated Melbourne 20-16 in round 18 and then again in the finals 28-12, to send Melbourne home in the first week of the finals for the first time since 2014.

The Storm and the Raiders have met 11 times since 2019, with the Storm edging out the Raiders six wins to five in the head-to-head record.

Melbourne Storm Form

Melbourne has been a little out of sorts lately with two wins and three losses in their last five games. To be fair two of those losses have been to the Penrith Panthers, however, the Storm have gone down heavily in those matchups by 18 points or more, which has some alarm bells ringing.

The Panthers once again suffocated the Storm as they did in round 18, winning the possession and the territory comfortably.

The Panthers kicking game was superb and they ran for over 500 more Run Metres than the Storm. It once again raised the question of how the Storm’s depth in their forward pack stands up against the top sides.

Verdict

This game will be a defensive battle between 4th and 5th on the ladder so don’t expect too many points. The tight contest will ensure that an end result of a margin of 1-12 will pay dividends, along with the Under 43.5 Game Points. Xavier Coates will get a try against Canberra continuing his good run against the Raiders.
