The Sea-Eagles preseason win total was 12.5 wins and we had them pegged for 9 with inevitable injuries possibly derailing their season. A quarter of the way through the season and the team has won 4 of 7 with two of those being against solid premiership contenders in the Roosters and Panthers. Their core have stayed relatively injury free and the addition of Luke Brooks to the team has done wonders for their dynamic running attack close to the opposition line.

Parramatta started the year very hopeful of a return to finals following a disastrous 2023 campaign. Two wins in their first three games gave fans something to cheer about with the platform laid out for a great season ahead. Enter injury bug. Star half Mitch Moses suffered a fractured foot following their round 3 win over Manly and since then the Eels have won only 1 of 4 games.

This coming round there will be multiple teams that will meet their opposition for the second time this season which will enable us to draw comparisons and get into the nitty gritty of the stats and numbers. For the Sea Eagles and the Eels the important factors are Run Metres, Tackles Inside 20m and Linebreaks.

Manly will win this game on the back of their attack, Parramatta can and will defend well but they will struggle to score points in this game as they have done in the last 4 without Moses.

  • Parramatta have the 2nd lowest average Run Metres of any team in the NRL with 1309m per game. They ran for 1306m in the rd 3 game.
  • Manly average 5.1 Linebreaks per game, 5th in the league
  • The Eels concede the most linebreaks on average of any team with 6.7 per game on the season
  • The Sea Eagles score a try for every 7.6 tackles Inside Opposition 20m, for the Eels it balloons to 10.7 tackles per try

Head to Head

Since the start of the 2019 season Manly and Parramatta have met 11 times in regular season matchups. The Eels hold a slight advantage in the Head to Head winning 6 of those 11 games including the last 2 in a row and 4 of the last 5.

In the previous meeting between these clubs in Round 3 this year Parramatta ran out winners 28-24 at Commbank Stadium.

Manly have though won 4 of 5 games as the home team since 2019 and have covered the line in all 6 of the last 11 matches.

The Game Total has gone Over in 7 of the last 11 whilst the Winning Margin has been between 1-12 in 6 of the last 11.

Manly were almost upset by former coach Des Hasler and the Gold Coast Titans last weekend as they came from behind to snatch the lead from the Sea Eagles with 25 minutes remaining. Manly had two tries denied late in the game which would have made the score look better but the stats paint the picture that the game was very even throughout.

The Sea Eagles are allowing opposition teams to score at an average of 22.28 pts per game which puts them as the 5th worst defensive team in the league.

The Eels got their asses handed to them last weekend against the Dolphins. After getting out to a two try lead it looked like Parramatta were going to run away with the game but 9 unanswered tries to the Phins put the game far out of Parramatta’s reach with a consolation try at the end contributing to a lackluster score.

The Dolphins ran for 1600 metres, had 14 offloads and 8 linebreaks in the win with the Eels missing 34 tackles and kicking for only 411 metres in the game where they sorely missed Mitch Moses.

Verdict

Parra have had the ascendency over Manly in recent years but without Mitch Moses steering the ship they just look lost at sea. Expect Manly to win this one and with the drubbing they received last week look for the Eels to have worked on their defensive structures. They have not allowed a team to score over 30 coming off a loss of more than 30 points in the past 2 seasons.
