It’s not so much that i don’t have confidence in the Titans to win, it is just difficult seeing them beating the teams that in front of them. They are still inconsistent performers and until they can make the leap they will be forever also-rans.
What’s to like
Whilst i personally don’t think Des Hasler is a top 5 coach in the NRL right now, there is no doubt that he has been successful during his career. Over his 458 games coached he has had 258 wins for a 56% win rate. He has reached finals in 14 of his 18 seasons as head coach, taking the Sea-Eagles and Bulldogs to a combined 5 Grand Finals winning 2 of them with Manly.
Adding to the coaching staff is a playing squad with star power. David Fifita, Beau Fermor and Tino Fa’asuamaleaui are top 10 players in their positions, whilst QLD Origin player AJ Brimson heads a backline with dynamic runners like Jayden Campbell and try scoring machine Alofiana Khan-Pereira.
What’s NOT to like
This team is injury prone, whether it is just plain bad luck or sub-par conditioning it has been something that has plagued the club for a very long time. Last year when their stars were available they were competitive and looked good. The problem became apparent though when injury struck that inconsistencies crept easily into the team and the results suffered.
The Titans were fourth worst in the league for opposition run metres in 2023 (1475m/gm). This metric is a significant factor in opposition scoring which Gold Coast were also fourth in the league at 27.2 opposition points per game. If they cannot sure up that defence through the middle in 2024 under Hasler then we will most definitely see Titans games with lots of points. They will just need to score more if they are to win.
