The Dolphins are one of the only teams that Wests Tigers have a winning record over in recent years. But that is because they have only played one game against each other. The Tigers though are on a roll winning two in a row to sit 6th on the NRL ladder including their early season Bye.

Over the past few seasons the Tigers have had one back to back win but not much else has gone right for them, so it will be interesting to see if history repeats itself or if they manage to break the trend.

The Dolphins have also started the 2024 season 2-1 with a Bye and thanks to their solid defensive efforts (or Oppositions lack of being able to score) they are sitting pretty in 1st position on the NRL ladder.

They are the expansion team that has had the quickest rise to top spot on the ladder excluding round 1 victories, another feather in the cap of coaching supremo Wayne Bennett.

The two wins these teams have had have come against wildly different opponents. Wests have won against two teams tipped to make the 8 whilst the Dolphins have put away two teams tipped to battle it out for the wooden spoon. That information is important in our data modelling and a component to why my prediction is that the score is kept relatively close and low.

With that said though the Dolphins will come away with the victory at home consolidating top spot in the league. The Hammer didn’t play against the Tigers last year but has scored 4 tries in 3 games so far this season and will cross here.

  • The Dolphins are 5th in the league in average Run Metres with 1477m per game
  • The Tigers concede the 9th most Run Metres in the NRL on average at 1419 m/gm
  • The Dolphins average the most Linebreaks per game in the league at 6.
  • The Tigers have conceded 63% of their Opponent tries down their right side

Head to Head

The lone meeting of these two teams in round 25 last year ended with a one point win to the Tigers 24-23 following an Api Koroisau penalty goal with 4 minutes remaining on the clock.

The Dolphins had 1863 Run Metres in that game but allowed the Tigers 6 Linebreaks and 47 Tackle Breaks which ultimately led to their demise. The Total went Under in that game and the Dolphins covered as 6.5 point Underdogs.

The Dolphins have had two convincing wins against two inferior opponents in the Dragons and Titans.

After getting thumped by North Queensland in the first round they regathered their composure to keep the Dragons to 0 in Round 2 before their Bye.

Last weekend started slowly with the Titans getting out to an early lead 10-0 but the Dolphins went on to score 30 unanswered points in a game where they once again notched over 1700 run metres.

The Tigers had an exhilarating victory over the Eels in the last game of Round 4 on Monday night.

Justin Olam was once again a menace close to the line crossing for a double with an Aidan Sezer 79th minute field goal ending up the difference at Commbank Stadium.

The Eels had 36 tackles in the Tigers 20m zone coming away with only 2 tries, a performance which would impress coach Benji Marshall.
