Dolphins vs Newcastle Knights, Round 8 2024 - Expert Prediction

There is plenty of belief in the Dolphins after their performance last weekend against Parramatta while missing a good handful of key players and now is the time to get those ‘Phins Up’ and ride the wave of the success of the Dolphins as they put the Knights to the slaughter without Kalyn Ponga in the lineup.

With the Dolphins back-five setting things up for their forwards, I see them controlling the run of play and putting pressure on the Newcastle line which will break under the pressure as it has done this season. The Phins will cover the 7.5 points as favourites and restricting the scoring of the Knights which will keep the game total Under 45.5 points.

Jack Bostock has lifted his game in all aspects this season and will cross for his eight try of the year.

  • Newcastle are 5W-9L-1D without Kalyn Ponga in the team over the past two seasons.
  • The Knights have averaged just 17.1 points per game this season.
  • 4 of the last 5 Dolphins games have gone Under the Game Total.
  • Jack Bostock has scored 7 tries in 6 matches this season.

Head to Head

The Dolphins and the Knights split the results in 2023 with Wayne Bennet’s men getting a 16-point victory in round 3, with Newcastle getting a 2-point win in round 23.

Both games went Over the expected game total as the dolphins covered the line in both matches.

Not sure who would have picked it, but what a win by the Dolphins last weekend in face of adversity getting up 44-16 against Parramatta with a heap of key out in their lineup, including Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow.

Despite losing the territory battle the Dolphins backs really stepped up with Trai Fuller, Jack Bostock and Tesi Niu all running for over 150 metres each in the match with the Dolphins collectively notching up 405 more metres than the Eels. the Parramatta defensive line opened up also for the Dolphins with the newcomers breaking the line 8 times in the contest which saw them score a total of nine tries.

The only change for Wayne Bennet and the Dolphins is Kurt Donoghoe returning from suspension and replacing Sean O’Sullivan.

The season is in serious jeopardy after losing Kalyn Ponga for what looks like the rest of the season in their 36-12 loss to the Canterbury Bulldogs last weekend. Canterbury broke the Knights line 6 times giving them quality scoring chances that Newcastle’s weak defensive line couldn’t withhold.

Without Ponga’s flare, Newcastle do not have the creativity in attack and that was very clear in the Knight’s loss to the Bulldogs last weekend. The men from the Hunter have been a shade of what they were in attack even with Ponga in the lineup, averaging just 17.1 points per game which is good for 14th in the NRL. they have also failed to find the creativity to break their opponents line more than 4.3 times per game, which is 13th-best in the league.

Newcastle Knights Team News

David Armstrong will make his debut at fullback, filling the shoes of Kalyn Ponga, who will be out for a long period, if not the rest of the season.

Dane Gagai returns in the centres with Tom Jenkins dropping out.

Jack Hetherigton has been suspended for his antics in the tunnel with Reed Mahoney with Jed Cartwright moving onto the bench.

Verdict

A Ponga-less Knights will struggle for points handing the Dolphins the win while covering the 7.5-point line as favourites. The lack of scoring from Newcastle will keep the total Under 44.5 points.

Jack Bostock has been a revelation in 2024 and he will cross for a try.
