Both teams will be without a couple of key players due to their Origin responsibilities, however, the Storm get a massive in with fullback Ryan Papenhuysen returning which gives them the slight edge up in Brisbane.

This game is expected to be a blow-for-blow contest with both teams boasting a top-three attack and a mid-table defence this season. The Game Total is a hefty one at 48.5 points, however, we have seen the attack of Melbourne roll on well the past month and the Dolphins are more than capable of staying with them, so the Over is the play.

Melbourne have been a little soft of late on their right edge so look for Euan Aitken to be a good-priced option for an anytime tryscorer.

  • 7 of 10 Melbourne wins have been by a margin of 1-12.
  • 3 of 5 Dolphins losses have been at Suncorp Stadium this season.
  • 4 of the past 5 Melbourne games have gone Over the Game Total.
  • Melbourne have conceded 5 tries in their past 3 games to second rowers.

Head to Head

Melbourne got the win in the only meeting with the Dolphins in their first season, beating the East Brisbane club, 24-16.

The Dolphins are hanging in there in the top-four with 8 wins this season, just one win off their total of 9 victories they took in their inaugural season, however, it is also just one win more than they had in round 15 in 2023.

That being said, Redcliff look more settled this season and have had to overcome adversity through injury and suspension and have still managed to get wins on the board.

Skimming through the stats and there is nothing good or bad about the Dolphins really, which is a positive for a team that is in their second season in the NRL. They are a mid-range club in all of the key numbers and have an attack that is electrifying when it is on, averaging 26.2 points a game, which is third-best in the league.

Dolphins Team News

The fullback position will be trusted to the more than capable Trai Fuller with Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow out with Origin duty.

Felise Kaufusi will also play for Queensland and will be replaced by Jesse Bromwich who returns from injury.

Tevita Pangai Junior will play his first game for the Dolphins with Kurt Donoghoe dropping off the bench.

For me, Melbourne have quietly achieved this season and now all of a sudden they are sitting at the top of the NRL ladder. The talk has been calm about the Storm as they have struggled heavily with injuries to Ryan Papenhuyzen and Cameron Munster with Jahrome Hughes also in and out of the squad but their depth has past the test so far.

7 of the Storm’s 10 wins have been by 1-12 so I guess it may be the fact they haven’t blasted teams out of the water and have been simply going about their way and getting W’s not drawing any attention to themselves as they fight through this tough injury period.

Despite the third lowest average winning margin in the top eight, the Storm still have the third best differential in the league at +97 due to their attack mostly which scores an average of 27.2 points per game which is good for second-best in the NRL.

Melbourne Storm Team News

Ryan Papenhuyzen returns from injury to take the No. 1 jersey with Sua Fa’alogo moving to the wing to cover for Xavier Coates who is on Origin duty.

Harry Grant will also be missing due to representative duties and will be covered by Bronson Garlick.

Will Warbrick returns from injury with Dean Ieremia missing selection.

Verdict

This game is likely to be a shootout with the Game Total getting surpassed as Melbourne get the victory by a margin of 1-12.

Euan Aitkin is priced well as an anytime tryscorer considering Melbourne’s woes defending their right side.
