Cronulla Sharks vs St George Illawarra Dragons Tips

This game is a no-brainer head to head, it really is a matter of by how much. The Sharks are looking to consolidate their spot in the top 4, while the whole Dragons organisation is in tatters.

The Sharks and Dragons met earlier in the year with Cronulla sinking their teeth into their Shire rivals and I can not see why it won’t happen again. I like the Sharks as 17.5-point favourites while scoring at least 6 or more tries.

The left-side defence of the Dragons is the worst in the comp, so I am going to chase the value and take Jesse Ramien to continue his round 4 try-scoring performance against the Dragons, where he scored a double, backing him to score anytime.

  • The Sharks have an average winning margin of 20 points against teams that are in the bottom 8.
  • 50% of Cronulla Sharks’ victories have been by a margin of 20 points or more.
  • The Dragons have allowed 6 or more tries against in their last 2 matches.
  • The Dragons concede 55% of their tries on their left side.
  • Jesse Ramien has scored 3 tries in his last 3 games against the Dragons.

Head to Head

The Sharks tore the Dragons to shreds in round 4, winning the battle of the shire 40-8, at Jubilee Stadium. The right edge of Cronulla ripped apart the Dragons, putting on four of the team's seven tries in the match.

Cronulla have also won the last 6 games against the Dragons, with two of the last three wins by over 24 points.

Cronulla Sharks Form

After losing two straight to top 4 sides Melbourne and Brisbane, Cronulla steadied the ship with a commanding win over the Canterbury Bulldogs 48-10, in round 16.

Their performance against top 8 sides has been poor in 2023, but their form against bottom 8 teams has been almost flawless winning seven of eight matches.

In their seven wins against bottom 8 sides at the time of the match, the Cronulla Sharks have won by an average margin of 20 points, including four wins by 18 points or more.

St George Illawarra Dragons Form

It is hard to see past the turmoil in the front-office of St George Illawarra when even thinking about how the team is actually performing on the field.

It has been a talking point all year beginning with the status of Anthony Griffin and now the Ben Hunt saga.

The Dragons have four wins all season and share the bottom of the table with the Tigers on 12 competition points.

It shows in their performance that they are not a strong group playing for each other, and it is going to be a long 10 rounds before they can try and reset over the summer under new coach Shane Flanagan.

St George Illawarra Dragons Team News

Moses Suli took a head knock and won't be playing in round 18. As a result, Tautau Moga will step in and start at centre.

Jack Bird misses this week with Ben Murdoch-Masila taking his spot in the starting lineup. Zane Musgrove has been moved to the reserves, and Toby Couchman will join the bench.

Ben Hunt has been named at halfback, even though he requested to be released on Monday.

Verdict

Things are going to go from bad to worse for the Dragons who will face their second shellacking in as many weeks. The Sharks should win by three converted tries, scoring six of their own in the process.

Jesse Ramien will terrorise the Dragons for the second time this season, crossing for at least one 4-pointer.
