Cronulla Sharks vs Manly Sea Eagles Predictions

One for the sandgropers here with the Southern beaches against the Northern Beaches. Neither team has been impressive of late against any type of quality opponent. So the real question here is whether or not either of these two teams could be classed as quality?

In any case I don't believe Manly are as good as Cronulla and considering Manly currently sit outside the 8 it is mentally reassuring for the Sharks who have won eight from nine against bottom 8 teams.

Add to that how dismal Manly have been as underdogs between 6-10 points over the past two years I'm siding with the Sharkies.

  • Cronulla have won 9 straight games covering in 7, as favourites of between 6-10 points.
  • Manly have only won 2 of 7 games since 2021 as underdogs of between 6-10 points.
  • 4 of the last 6 games between Sharks and Sea Eagles has gone OVER the total.
  • The Sea Eagles left hand side defence has conceded 49% of opposition tries in 2023. Jesse Ramien plays on that side of the field and scored in their round 11 game earlier this year.

Head to Head

Cronulla hold a slight edge on the head to head numbers winning 4-2 over the last six regular season games played against Manly since 2019.

Manly’s last win came during the covid affected 2021 season with a 40-22 win at Suncorp Stadium.

The previous meeting of these two teams in Round 11 this year went to the Sharks 20-14.

Cronulla Sharks Form

The Sharks currently sit 6th on the NRL ladder despite only winning one of six games against current top 8 opponents.

Last week’s outing against the Warriors was one of the poorest defensive displays that the Sharks have produced in recent years forcing coach Craig Fitzgibbon to shuffle his squad.

Cronulla Sharks Team News

Following a horrendous defensive performance against the Warriors, Matt Moylan has been dropped with Braydon Trindall coming in at five-eighth. Connor Tracey will start at centre with Siosifa Talakai coming off the bench.

Captain Dale Finucane returns from suspension at lock which sees Cam McInnes move back to the bench.

Back-row pair Teig Wilton and Wade Graham will both miss a few weeks, Jesse Colquhuon moves into the starting side as a replacement.

Manly Sea Eagles Form

Since their round 14 bye the Sea Eagles have been nothing but inconsistent.

They came out the blocks firing in round 15, smashing the Dolphins 58-18. They then followed that performance up with two consecutive single score games, being totally outclassed by their opponents Parramatta (34-4) and Melbourne (24-6).

A slight reprieve before their final bye in round 19 just getting on top of the Roosters before again being held to single digits against the Cowboys last week.

Manly Sea Eagles Team News

Matt Lodge is named on bench following a mid-season switch from the Roosters, Sean Keppie is also included in the 17.

Toafofoa Sipley and Ethan Bullemor drop out of the side, Ben Trbojevic and Karl Lawton are still out with injuries.

Cronulla have been atrocious against top caliber teams but have absolutely dusted everyone else. Manly are everyone else so expect the Sharks to get their second win of the year over their coastal counterparts with Jesse Ramien crossing for another four pointer.
