Cronulla Sharks vs Canberra Raiders Tips

Cronulla will need to break a nine-game losing streak against Canberra if they want to take any momentum into the 2023 Final Series. The Raiders, on the other hand, couldn’t have asked for a better opponent on their likely quest for a home prelim.

The game-changer in this matchup on Sunday is the absentees for Canberra, with Josh Papali’i and Corey Horsborough missing. Besides captain Joseph Tapine, Papali’i and Horsborough do a mountain of work and can both change the game for the Raiders.

It will now be the Sharks that will have command in the middle, which won’t bid well for Canberra’s chances of getting the victory and a home prelimary final.

I am predicting that Canberra will not be able to keep up with Cronulla who will eventually put on the points and score over 27.5 on their way to victory. The Game Total will stay UNDER 45.5 with the lack of attack from the Raiders. Nicho Hynes will want to be full of confidence heading into the finals and will cross for a try.

  • The Sharks have scored more than 27.5 points in 2 of their last 3 matches.
  • Canberra have conceded more than 27.5 points in 3 of their last 5 matches.
  • The Game Total has gone UNDER 45.5 points in 6 of the last 9 games between Cronulla and Canberra.
  • Canberra have conceded a try to an opposition half in their last 5 matches.

Head to Head

Canberra certainly know how to beat Cronulla, winning their last 9 games straight against the men from the Shire.

The two most recently met in round 3, 2023, when Corey Horsborough scored a double to help the Raiders edge out the Sharks 24-20.

Cronulla Sharks Form

A Nicho Hynes-less Cronulla Sharks took a heavy defeat against the Newcastle Knights last week, 32-6. The Sharks once again failed to put in a good performance against a fellow top-8 side, simply having no answer for Kalyn Ponga and the game-management skills of the Knights.

Newcastle had 59% of the ball but more detrimentally they had 61% of the territory, offering the Sharks just 11 tackles inside the opposition 20 metres.

Although the Sharks are pretty much safe when it comes to missing the finals, it will be important for them to come into the 2023 finals series with a good performance under their belt.

Canberra Raiders Form

Canberra stayed in the game against league leaders the Brisbane Broncos last weekend, however, it always felt like Brisbane were in control, eventually getting a 29-18 result.

The loss to the Broncos was their fourth in six weeks and leaves the Raiders needing a win in the final round to make the top-8.
