Cronulla Sharks vs Canberra Raiders Tips

Cronulla put in an awful performance against Wests last week and it isn’t going to look any better this week I’m afraid with the Sharkies forward pack demolished with injury. The Raiders to strike the wounded Cronulla side and get the upset.

The Raiders have had a culture change and they have played some really controlled footy over the first three rounds, having two 13+ wins and narrowly losing to the Warriors in New Zealand. They come up against the Sharks who haven’t looked convincing in attack at all this season and opened up their defence in a big loss to the Tigers.

The Sharks are suffering from an injury crisis in their forward pack which does not bode well for them going up against Canberra whose big boys have been exceptional to start the year.

Depending on how brave you are, you can take the Raiders with a 4.5-point start, but I am going to take the money line for the value and depending on how confident I feel on Sunday, I may just throw a little on another 13+ victory for the Raiders.

After seeing the defensive performance of the Sharks last week, I am comfortable that the Raiders will cross at least three times and go over their team total of 17.5 points. With the Sharks having some new combinations and Kyal Iro playing in the centres, look for Matt Timoko to cross on the right hand side of the field for the Raiders.

  • Canberra have won 9 of the past 10 games against Cronulla.
  • The Raiders are ranked 4th in the NRL with an average of 1,417 run metres.
  • Canberra has scored over 17.5 points in 8 of their past 10 games against Cronulla.
  • Matt Timoko scored 11 tries last season.

Head to Head

Cronulla beat Canberra in round 27 last season 24-6 which was the first time the Sharks had beaten the Raiders in 10 matches, including a 24-10 victory in round 3, 2023.

Canberra had won 9 straight matches against Cronulla dating back to round 19, 2018 since the Sharks had won previously.

Cronulla Sharks Form

What do you say about Cronulla after that performance against the Tigers last weekend?

Wests outplayed them in every statistic and it showed directly on the field with a 32-6 loss. The Sharks had absolutely no creativity in attack and their defence opened up wider than the mouth of Jaws.

Things will not get any easier for the Sharks either this week with half of their forward pack wiped out with injury or suspension.

Cronulla Sharks Team News

An injury crisis in Cronulla has Toby Rudolf, Dale Finucane and Royce Hunt are all out this week. Braden Hamlin-Uele and Briton Nikora are also unavailable this week again.

Sifa Talakai has been named in the backrow with Kayal Iro to start in the centres. Tom Hazelton will start with Tukupa-Ke Hau Tapuha and Daniel Atkinson will join the interchange bench.

Canberra Raiders Form

The Raiders have started this season much better than I expected with a couple of dominant performances over the Knights and the Tigers in their opening two games.

They did lose to the Warriors in New Zealand 18-10 last week, but the match was certainly in the balance for a long time with Canberra leading 10-6 with 20 minutes to go.

The Raiders forwards have lifted this season and are moving their team down the field. Canberra ranks fourth in the NRL with an average of 1,417 run metres per game.

Although I am not a big fan of judging teams on completion rate, the Raiders have started the season protecting the ball, completing 86 percent of their sets and are ranked in the bottom half of the NRL in offloads, which means they are keeping things simple and it is working for them.

Canberra Raiders Team News

Seb Kris returns in the centres and James Schiller has been named on the wing with Nick Cotric named in the reserves.

Corey Horsburgh has been named in the reserves despite serving his suspension from last season.

The Raiders to win as the underdog, scoring at least 18 points in the match.
