Canterbury Bulldogs vs Parramatta Eels, Round 14 2024 - Expert Prediction

Canterbury have made some huge improvement this season and will continue to impress with a rare win against the west rivals Parramatta on the King’s Birthday Holiday.

The Eels have been boosted by the return of their stars like Mitch Moses and Clint Gutherson and the book actually has them starting as favourites in this one. Their attack improves instantaneously, however, their defence is still a concern for them, ranking in the bottom two in Points Conceded and Linebreaks Conceded this season and there is no quick-fix.

Canterbury’s defence conceded the second-least of any team in the comp and will contain the Eels attack to some respect. The Bulldogs have also shown that they have the ability to put up points against soft defensive lines and will do enough to get the win as the underdog and score over their Team Total of 20.5.

Jacob Kiraz will be attacking the weak right-side defence of the Eels so expect the Dogs to send plenty of traffic that way and the Canterbury winger to cross.

  • Canterbury concede just 16.08 points per game this season.
  • Parramatta have the second-worst defence in the NRL allowing their opponents to score 29.5 points per game.
  • The Eels allow 6.5 Linebreaks per game, the most in the NRL.
  • 30 of 63 tries scored on the Eels are down their right side.

Head to Head

Canterbury and Parramatta have faced each other twice in each of the past 5 seasons and already once in 2024 with the Eels in command with a 9-2 lead head to head.

Parramatta smashed the Bulldogs in round one 26-8, with the Eels blanking the Bulldogs in the first half, going into the sheds 14-0 up, before scoring the first try of the second half taking a 20-0 lead and ending the match.

The Bulldogs continue to impress, bouncing back from a couple of tough losses to get two big wins against St George 44-12 and Newcastle 32-2 last weekend.

Their defence has been a big improvement from 2023, averaging just 16.08 points per game against which is exactly half of the 32 points per game they allowed in 2023.

Theri attack has also been improving as they play more of a controlled style of footy, working on winning territory and possession instead of putting up wild kicks that often lead to nothing. This new, more mature game has them pinned with the third-best differential in the NRL with +77, despite sitting ninth on the ladder.

Canterbury Bulldogs Team News

The Eels season was rejuvenated by the inclusion of a handful of their starters from injury and suspension last week when they got just their fourth win of the year, breaking a five-game losing streak 34-22 against the Cronulla Sharks, who were missing their Origin representatives.

The Eels attack scored more points than they have all season last week on the back of a powerful running game from their back-five and the two props, Reagan Campbell-Gillard and Junior Paulo who did the majority of the work.

Defence is still going to be the downfall of the Eels though as they leaked 22 points to the Sharks who were missing their starting halfback Nicho Hynes and had just 43% of the territory.

Parramatta Eels Team News

Bailey Simonsson has been ruled out for the rest of the season which opens up a starting spot for young-gun Blaize Talagi in the centres with Sean Russell moving to the wing.

J’Maine Hopgood is set to back up from Origin and Joe Ofahengaue will drop to the bench.
