NRL 2024 Team Previews, Predictions & Player Movement: Canberra Raiders

Where they finish: 11th

When we started looking at the Raiders season we had them in the 8. But factoring in their woeful defence in 2023 as well as their Pythagorean Win Expectation we have pushed them down the order.

What’s to like

The Raiders have done well to recruit replacements for Jack Wighton and Jarrod Croker. Kaeo Weekes is a promising young half that will continue to develop under Ricky Stuart whilst Zac Hosking will be putting a mountain of pressure on the incumbent Raiders forwards for a starting spot. There is also extra coverage for the centres now which Canberra have at times found difficult to manage.

The only real shining light statistically from last season for the Green Machine were their numbers around Missed Tackles. The Raiders were ranked 7th in league, missing only 29.7 tackles per game.

What’s NOT to like

With a couple of players out to start the season due to suspension and injury it will be important Canberra to get off to a good start. They don’t have it easy though meeting the Knights, Warriors, Sharks & Eels across the first 5 rounds. No game is easy in the NRL but it is an upward battle from the get go.

In 2023 the Raiders were the equal worst team at creating line breaks (4/gm) which saw a significant decrease in their points scored over the season 20.6/gm (13th). They also had by far and away the worst point differential of the top 14 teams (-137).

Canberra Raiders Offseason Player Movement

Ins: Kaeo Weekes (Sea Eagles), Simi Sasagi (Knights), Morgan Smithies (Wigan Warriors), Zac Hosking (Panthers)
