Canberra Raiders vs Wests Tigers Tips

Canberra Raiders and Wests Tigers are set for a high scoring game. I am sticking with new Wests fullback Daine Laurie after scoring twice in the Tigers’ trial win.

  • Canberra Raiders won all 9 games at GIO Stadium last season
  • Canberra Raiders have won 7 of their last 8 games against West Tigers
  • Wests Tigers have lost 5 of their last 6 games
  • Wests Tigers averaged 59.5 total points in their last 4 games
  • Wests Tigers won 52-18 victory against Manly in their trial game

Head to Head

Wests Tigers have a narrow 20-19 advantage against Canberra Raiders in 39 games.

The Raiders have won seven of the last eight encounters including 14-6 in Campbelltown last season.

Canberra Raiders Form

Canberra finished sixth last season with a 14-6 record. The Raiders won their last three regular season games before finals wins against Cronulla and Sydney Roosters.

Ricky Stuart’s side took on Melbourne in the preliminary final, going down 30-10 at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane.

Canberra lost 26-20 against the Roosters in their trial match at Seiffert Oval in Queanbeyan. Hudson Young, Joe Tapine, Jack Wighton scored first half tries before Stuart made nine changes at the break.

Canberra Raiders Team News

Jarrod Croker (shoulder) will miss the first round of the season. Sebastian Kris is selected in his place ahead of Matthew Timoko.

Josh Hodgson, Bailey Simonsson and Curtis Scott are back from injury in a huge boost for Ricky Stuart.

Veteran recruit Ryan James has been named in the No.17 jersey

Corey Harawira-Naera and Corey Horsburgh have been left out of the 21-man squad after being suspended for one and two weeks respectively for off-season drink-driving charges.

Wests Tigers Form

Wests Tigers finished 11th last season with a 7-13 record. They lost five of their last six, the only win in that run coming in a 34-32 victory against Manly.

The Tigers underwent an overhaul in the off-season. Michael Maguire's side enter the new season on the back of an emphatic trial win over Manly.

They racked up a 52-18 drubbing of the Sea Eagles at Leichhardt Oval with halfback Luke Brooks having an outstanding game.

New fullback Daine Laurie impressed at his new club after playing three NRL games for Penrith last season. He scored two tries in 12 minutes.

Wests Tigers Team News

New recruit Daine Laurie has unsurprisingly been given the fullback spot. Moses Mbye has shaken off a hamstring concern and moves to the halves.

New recruit James Roberts lines up in the centres alongside Joey Leilua who returns after missing the big trial win over Manly with a foot injury.

Adam Doueihi and Zane Musgrove are suspended.

Emerging star Shawn Blore (wrist) will miss the first six weeks after undergoing surgery. Billy Walters (knee) will also miss around six weeks.

Verdict

Canberra Raiders are short priced favourites at GIO Stadium. I am backing over 43.5 points with West Tigers involved in plenty of high scoring matches at the tail end of last season and 70 points scored in their trial game.
