Canberra Raiders vs Gold Coast Titans, Round 6 2024 - Expert Prediction

The Raiders have moved on from the Jack Wighton era and appear to be a team full of young confidence in 2024. Canberra face the Titans this weekend with Des Hasler’s troops still winless this season and they will remain that way with the task of beating the Raiders at GIO on Sunday too large for the struggling Gold Coast side.

Playing down in Canberra is a tough task, but none more so than meeting the Milk on a Sunday afternoon in front of their boisterous clan that are cheering on the new talent leading their team. We saw the crust of the group rise last Sunday at GIO with Matt Timoko, Ethan Strange and Xavier Savage playing their best games this season when the Raiders trounced the Eels.

The Titans will face the same task and I expect the Raiders, who are beaming with confidence, will do a Sunday number on them, just as they did with Parra. The Titans defence has been woeful and the speed and class of the Raiders is going to be tto much for the fishnet defensive line of the Titans.

The Raiders will run away with this game and cover the 8.5-point line as favourites. The Titans defence will be blown apart and the Raiders and our models suggest that they will put up another score close to the 30-point mark, which I tend to agree wholeheartedly.

Matt Timoko has to be up there as one of the best centres in the competition now and his hard running is going to attract a lot of attention from the Titans. Even with the defence keeping a close eye on the 24-year-old I still see him crossing for another try.

  • Canberra has won 9 of their past 11 Sunday games at GIO Stadium since the 2021 season.
  • The Raiders average winning margin is 23 points in 2024.
  • The Titans have conceded 28 points or more in each match this season.
  • Matt Timoko has scored three tries in his past 3 games.

Head to Head

The Raiders beat the Titans 26-22 in round 18 at GIO Stadium last season in the only game between the two clubs in 2023.

The Raiders have had it over the Titans in recent years, winning 7 of the past 8 matches since 2019.

Canberra has been one of the surprise packets of 2024 so far for mine. I had them pegged to regress this season but Ricky Stuart has built a culture of belief and the Raiders are playing much better footy than expected and getting a lot of improvement from their younger guys.

Canberra did a number on the Eels last week, despite losing Jordan Rapan in the first 5 minutes of the match, beating Parra 41-8 on the back of some electric play by Matt Timoko (2 tries, 2 linebreaks and 1 try assist) and Ethan Strange (1 linebreak, 2 linebreak assists and 2 try assists).

Chevy Stewart comes into the side for Jordan Rapana who will be out for an extended period suffering a knee injury in the Raiders win over the Eels.

Zac Hosking returns from injury and slots into the second row, Ata Mariota moves to the bench and Simi Sasagi drops to the reserves.

The Titans are still chasing their first win but Des Hasler is sticking strong with his side that put in a solid second half performance in their loss to the Cowboys 25-22. The Gold Coast looked much more dangerous in attack when A.J Brimsongot more involved and sparked some life into what has been a dormant attack.

Des Hasler is known for his defence-first style of coaching, however, the Titans are ranked worst in the league in missed tackles (40/G) and linebreaks conceded (7.5/G) and are also allowing their opposition to score 31.3 points per game which is second-worst in the league.
