Canberra Raiders vs Canterbury Bulldogs, Round 11 2024 - Expert Prediction

The Canterbury Bulldogs will move into the top-eight for the first time since Round 5 last season, leapfrogging their opponents the Canberra Raiders, by covering the 3.5 point line as favourites to open Magic Round at Suncorp Stadium.

The Bulldogs appear to have turned a leaf and are playing more percentage football this season, which has given them more expected victories and also muscling it out with the big guns of the NRL. It is now time for the Doggies to show their worth and put the Raiders to their own sword on Friday night.

Canberra’s defence has let them down over the past month and I expect the Bulldogs left-side attack to put them under some serious pressure, as nit has done to superior opposition in 2024. Matt Burton is playing for an Origin call up, so expect the Dogs five-eight o be in the thick of it and even cross for a try.

  • Canterbury have had more Territory than their opponent in their past 7 matches with an average of 55% in each match.
  • The Raiders are the only team in the top-eight with a negative points differential.
  • The Bulldogs are the only team in the bottom-eight with a positive points differential.
  • The Bulldogs have scored 48% of their tries on the left-side of the field.

Head to Head

Canberra have beaten the Bulldogs in eight consecutive matches including a 34-30 win in Magic Round last season and also a 20-18 victory in 2021’s version of the long weekend of footy at Suncorp.

The Raiders got a well-deserved week off in round 10 after coming back from 20-0 down against the Manly in Round 9, beating the Sea Eagles 26-24 with trusty Hudson Young crossing for the game-winner in the 76th minute.

Their performance against Manly was an important one after getting dusted by the Sharks 40-0 and Brisbane by 24 points the couple before.

There is a lot to like about Ricky Stuart’s men but their inexperience has them playing inconsistent footy at NRL level, which can be seen in their results. Just like their game against the Sea Eagles, they can go missing for long periods and then put on a strong performance in the half that follows.

Canterbury are certainly a team on the improve and have really looked dangerous over the last month or so getting three wins from five games and pushing both Melbourne and Penrith to a one-score contest, losing to Melbourne by 2 points and Penrith last week by six.

A lot can be said about their attack on the left side with a rejuvenated Matt Burton linking up with Villiame Kikau and Bronson Xerri, however, what has impressed the most has been their attitude in defence and their ability to now play the territory game instead of always looking for flare to get them home.

Last week’s match against Penrith is the perfect example. Yes Cleary left the match and plays a big role in how the Panthers control the game, however, the Bulldogs drew dead-even with the Premiers in Possession and Territory and had almost identical attacking stats, even created 4 more linebreaks than the Panthers with a little execution letting them down, which could have seen them possibly get the upset win.

Coach Cameron Ciraldo has named an unchanged side for the Bulldogs after their stellar performance against the Panthers last week.
