Canterbury Bulldogs vs Penrith Panthers Tips

Penrith’s defence is one of the best in NRL. The Bulldogs' lack of attacking weapons, coupled with their worsened defence, augers badly for them here and Penrith should win handsomely.

  • Canterbury Bulldogs have won 4 of their last 23 matches.
  • Canterbury Bulldogs have scored an average of 14.98 points per game across their last 50 matches.
  • Canterbury Bulldogs have lost 5 of their last 7 matches against Penrith Panthers.
  • Penrith Panthers have won 21 of their last 24 matches.
  • Penrith have kept their opponents to 16 points or less in 21 of their last 25 matches.

Head-to-Head

A total of 96 premiership games have been played between the Panthers and the Bulldogs, with Canterbury winning 53 to Penrith’s 40. There have also been three games drawn.

Penrith have won 17 of their last 27 contests against the Dogs and 6 of the last 10.

They’ve met at Bankwest Stadium just once, where the Bulldogs scored a 16-8 win in Round 20, 2019.

Canterbury Bulldogs Form

Canterbury won just three of their 20 games played in 2020, with their defence ensuring they narrowly avoided the wooden spoon on points difference.

They hired a new coach in Trent Barrett and made a raft of personnel changes during the off-season, which looked to improve the side when they beat Cronulla 16-12 in the pre-season trial.

Last weekend, while their attack was somewhat improved, their defence was worse as they lost 32-16 against Newcastle Knights in Round 1.

Canterbury Bulldogs Team News

First choice hooker Jeremy Marshall-King returns to the side, albeit on the bench, at the expense of Round 1 debutant Bradley Deitz.

Corey Waddell, who was in the run-on side in Round 1, has been dropped back to the bench, with Raymond Faitala-Mariner promoted to the second row.

Penrith Panthers Form

The Panthers suffered just two losses in 2020 – Round 5 against Parramatta Eels and the Grand Final against Melbourne Storm. It was a disappointing end to what was a near perfect season.

Penrith played two trials in the pre-season, winning both games.

The Panthers then produced a 24-0 shut-out win over a very poor performing North Queensland side in Round 1 last week. It was a game where the Panthers attack didn’t function as well as expected, and there should be more to come.

Penrith Panthers Team News

The Panthers come into this match with the exact same side that beat the Cowboys last weekend. New recruit Scott Sorensen has been added to the extended bench, but is not expected to play.

Verdict

Penrith’s recent record against the Bulldogs has seen them win five of the last seven encounters.

Alarmingly for the Bulldogs, the Panthers defence has been very effective at shutting down the Dogs attack. In the 13 games between these sides since 2013, the Bulldogs have reached 20 points or more just twice and Penrith should win this one comfortably.
