Head-to-Head

Parramatta Eels have dominated the head to head in recent times, losing just two of the last eight clashes.

The Eels have won three in row with 58-0, 34-6 and 26-12 victories. The 34-6 win at Suncorp Stadium last season was a fifth in the last 10 visits to Brisbane.

Brisbane Broncos Form

The Broncos ended last season with a club record 11 straight defeats to finish bottom of the pile and collect the unwanted wooden spoon.

Just three wins all season and 17 defeats in total left them in 16th place on points difference with the Canterbury Bulldogs also mustering up three wins.

The preparations for this season haven't given much hope of vast improvement from the Broncos either, despite Kevin Walters taking over as coach.

They drew 22-22 with Wynnum Manly Seagulls in one pre-season trial match, and then led early before losing 34-18 to North Queensland Cowboys.

Brisbane Broncos Team News

The Broncos start the season without centre Kotoni Staggs (ACL) and prop Payne Haas, who is suspended for the opening three weeks.

Teenager Tesi Niu has been named in place of Staggs alongside Herbie Farnsworth in the centres, while Brodie Croft starts in the halves.

David Mead will make his second Broncos debut on the wing after returning from Super League side Catalans Dragons.

Winger Corey Oates is left out, but Thomas Flegler has been passed fit to line-up among the replacements.

Parramatta Eels Form

Parramatta Eels were in the minor premiership hunt for much of last season, but ended in third spot with a 15-5 record having lost three of their last seven matches.

It was back-to-back defeats for the Eels in the finals as they were dumped out in quickfire fashion.

A 36-24 loss to Melbourne Storm, the subsequent Grand Final winners, and a 38-24 defeat to South Sydney Rabbitohs ended Parramatta's season.

In two pre-season trial matches, Parramatta beat the St George Illawarra Dragons 28-6 before losing 16-6 to Penrith Panthers.

Verdict

The Broncos endured a forgetful season last year, picking up the wooden spoon on the back of an 11-game losing run. Having finished third on the ladder, the Eels went out of the finals with a whimper.

After three wide-margin wins in a row over the Broncos, Parramatta are tipped to make a winning start to the season.
