Brisbane Broncos bid to avoid the wooden spoon when they end a sorry season against North Queensland Cowboys at Suncorp Stadium on Thursday. The Broncos have slipped to the bottom after 10 losses in a row and come up against a Cowboys side with one win in their last 12 matches.

Broncos Form & Team News

The Broncos stand on the verge of the NRL wooden spoon after a 10th straight defeat last week saw them slump to the foot of the ladder. The latest Brisbane loss saw them go down 26-12 to the Parramatta Eels.

Canterbury Bulldogs' surprise win over South Sydney Rabbitohs last week moved them off the bottom and left the Broncos needing a win against the Cowboys to stand a chance of avoiding the wooden spoon.

Will a Queensland derby be the sort of game that the Broncos can snap their losing run in? Or will it be more points piled on against the record-breaking Brisbane defence that has conceded 592 points with a game to go.

Coach Peter Gentle has dropped winger Corey Oates to the bench and replaced him with Xavier Coates. Kotoni Staggs also comes in as an experiment at five-eighth, Jesse Arthars starts in the centres and Jordan Riki returns from suspension in place of the injury David Fifita.

Payne Haas comes back into the starting line up at the expense of the benched Ben Te'o, Ethan Bullemor drops to the reserves and Tyson Gamble is out after a head knock last week.

1. Darius Boyd 2. Xavier Coates 3. Jesse Arthars 4. Herbie Farnworth 5. Richard Kennar 6. Kotoni Staggs 7. Tom Dearden 8. Joe Ofahengaue 9. Issac Luke 10. Payne Haas 11. Jordan Riki 12. Cowboys Form & Team News

The Cowboys are only one win better off than the Broncos with a 4-15 record, but they will be spared the wooden spoon even if losing this game with Brisbane boasting a points differential 172 points worse off than North Queensland.

It is now just one win in the last 12 matches for the Cowboys, a Golden point victory over the St George Illawarra Dragons three games back. Last weekend North Queensland lost 31-12 to minor premiers Penrith Panthers.

The Cowboys are strengthened by the return of prop Josh McGuire from suspension and Jason Taumalolo, who starts at lock. Gavin Cooper is named to start, but could switch places with Tom Gilbert again before kick-off.

Corey Jensen and Francis Molo drop to the bench and are joined by John Asiata on his return. Emre Pere and Ben Condon make way.
