NRL 2024 Team Previews, Predictions & Player Movement: Brisbane Broncos

Where they finish in 2024: 1st

The Brisbane Broncos are the real deal and have over achieved on their win expectancy over the last two years. With all good things coming in threes, especially when it comes to expectancy trends, we have Brisbane winning the NRL Minor Premiership this season.

What’s to like

With one of, if not the most electrifying player in the NRL at fullback getting service from the General Adam Reynolds and one of the surprise packets of 2023 Ezra Mam there is not a defensive line that is safe anywhere on the field. You can even add in that they do have a complete spine with the vast improvement of Billy Walters at the end of last season.

I was pretty sceptical with the move of Selwyn Cobbo into the centres when the news broke early in the preseason, but I am beginning to warm to the idea. That is under the circumstances that they get him early ball, so that he gets the chance to meet the expectation that he can be GI-like on the fringe.

What’s NOT to like

Let’s start off with the last 18 minutes of their 2023 Grand Final performance, that wasn’t too flash. Now that we got that out of the way let’s move on.

The loss of the work engine Thomas Flegler is going to be hard to replace and no disrespect, but Corey Jensen and Kobe Hetherington are not at the same standard as the QLD Origin forward. Both props are going to need to lift, whichever gets the start, if they are going to fill the void.

Although the move of Selwyn Cobbo into the centres can be a positive it will also takes away the wide dynamic that had on the right-side of their attack. Cobbo was one of the best wingers in the NRL and losing him on the sideline has the potential to make Brisbane less potent in the air and on long sweeping plays from Reece Walsh and the likes.
