If you are old enough to remember the heydays of the 90’s these two teams were STACKED! The rivalry was also immense with the Raiders having multiple Queenslanders in their team and the Origin team-mates always wanting to get one up over each other.

Things are a little different nowadays but the Broncos are still stacked and the Raiders are quietly going about their business in the nation's capital currently sitting 3rd on the ladder. Both teams are struggling a little with injury right now but there is enough star power in both squads to be able to put on a show in the Saturday primetime slot.

Canberra are averaging 31.5 tackles per game in the Opposition 20m and are averaging a try every 7.3 tackles which is better than the league average. They had big troubles though last week against the NRL’s second worst defensive team but time will tell if it was a sudden slump or if there is something functionally wrong with the Raiders attack.

Brisbane currently sit outside the 8 but are on the same amount of wins as the 5th placed Dolphins. What the Broncos have been extremely good at this season is keeping their cool even in the face of an opposition onslaught. Last week the Dolphins dominated possession and territory yet the Broncos were able to come away with a decisive victory.

That is what i predict to happen again this week. The stats following the game will show a close affair but the scoreboard will reflect a different narrative with the Broncos winning comfortably.

  • The Broncos score 1 try for every 6 tackles inside their Opposition 20m zone, 3rd best rate in the NRL
  • Brisbane score 24.7 points per game, the 4th best Scoring team in the league
  • Canberra have scored 18 or more points in their last 6 games against Brisbane
  • 5 of the last 6 games between these teams have gone Over the Game Total

Head to Head

The Broncos and Raiders rivalry dates back to the early 90’s with some cracking games played between these teams through the years. More recently though these teams have not played any large number of games against each other with only 6 matchups over the past 5 seasons dating back to 2019.

Canberra hold the advantage over Brisbane having won 4 of those 6, three times as favourites and most recently in round 6 last year as the Underdogs. Brisbane have the most recent success in this matchup with a 29-18 win in round 26 last year.

5 of the last 6 games have gone Over the Game Total with the winning team covering the line in each game. The last three winning margins have all been by less than 12 points.

The Broncos took an important win last weekend against the Dolphins. Partly to extend their own record to 3 wins on the season but also to regain some leverage over the newcomers who were riding high at the top of the competition and taking the limelight from Brisbane’s biggest team.

Without Adam Reynolds the Broncos have still been able to score points and they have scored at least 5 tries in their last 3 games in a row. They now average 24.7 points per game ranking them 4th in the NRL for Points Scored.

Brisbane Broncos Team News

A host of Broncos stars remain out of the team this week with Adam Reynolds, Payne Haas, Brendan Piakura and Deine Mariner still all overcoming their injuries.

This week’s team is unchanged from their round 6 win over the Dolphins.

The Raiders are once again flying under the radar this season and currently sit 3rd on the ladder with 4 wins and 3 losses on the season. Last start against the Titans it took them until the 89th minute to seal the deal with a Jamal Fogerty field goal breaking the Golden Point deadlock after the Raiders allowed 2 tries in the last 5 minutes of regular time.

Canberra dominated Possession (59%) and Territory (65%) in the game racking up 2084 Run Metres against the NRL’s second worst defensive team. With 54 tackles in the Titans 20m zone and only 3 tries, the score should though be seen as a failure. The league average being 1 try for every 8 tackles in the Opposition 20m.
