Winnipeg Jets @ Vancouver Canucks Tips

The Winnipeg Jets and the Vancouver Canucks clash once again in an NHL regular season game on Thursday, March 25. It’s the 7th meeting of the season between the Jets and the Canucks, with Winnipeg 4-2 up. Both these teams compete in the all-Canadian North Division, with the Jets in third place, while Vancouver are 6th.

On Tuesday Winnipeg thumped the Canucks 4-0, with goals from Blake Wheeler, Adam Lowry (two) and Paul Stastny. The Jets goal tender Connor Hellebuyck was the real star of the show, stopping an incredible 22 shots to record his first shutout (clean sheet) of the season.

Despite that result, I was impressed with the firepower of the Canucks, and I’m backing Brock Boeser, Bo Harvart and Elias Petterson to add to their combined tally of 40 goals and breach Winnipeg’s defence on Thursday, earning them their third win this season over the Jets.

  • Jets 3rd in NHL North Division
  • Jets 18-13 this season
  • Canucks 5th in NHL North Division
  • Canucks 16-19 this season

Head to Head

The Winnipeg Jets and the Vancouver Canucks have played each other 33 times in NHL regular season games, with Winnipeg leading their head-to-head 21-12. In the 11 matches they have played since the start of 2018 NHL season, Winnipeg lead 9-2. The Jets and the Canucks have faced-off six times in 2021, with the Jets leading 4-2. In their most recent encounter on Tuesday (March 23), Winnipeg won emphatically 4-0.

Winnipeg Jets Form

The Winnipeg Jets are currently 3rd in the NHL North Division on 40 points, just two points adrift of the two teams at the top - the Edmonton Oilers and the Toronto Maple Leafs. Breathing down Winnipeg’s neck are the Montreal Canadiens on 37 points with a game in hand, while the Canucks are just two points further back.

The North Division was created by the NHL to protect the Canadian teams from having to repeatedly cross the US border during the global pandemic. The result is the most talent-laden and competitive division in the league.

At the end of February Winnipeg were on the verge of taking over at the top from Toronto, but March has seen them suffer 6 defeats in twelve games. However on Tuesday they looked back to their best, hammering Vancouver 4-0.

Vancouver Canucks Form

If March hasn’t been too kind to Winnipeg (6-6), it’s been a different story for Vancouver.  The Canucks were bottom of the table after losing 11 out of 13 games in February, however a 4-0 win over Winnipeg on March 2 turned their season around.

So far this month the Canucks are 8-4, although they have lost their last two matches, most recently a 4-0 defeat in their sixth meeting with the Jets on Tuesday. Overall Vancouver are 16-20, and are a much better team than their record would suggest. If they can raise their game even further, Vancouver might yet make the playoffs.

Verdict

The six matches played out between the Winnipeg Jets and the Vancouver Canucks have been among the most compelling and exciting in the NHL this season. On average each game has featured 5 goals, and both teams have handed each other emphatic beat-downs.

I’m backing the Vancouver Canucks to turn the tables on the Winnipeg Jets on Thursday, winning decisively by at least two goals. On Tuesday, Jets keeper Connor Hellebuyck played out of his skin and stopped 22 shots from the Canucks.

The law of averages says that won’t happen twice, and this time I’m seeing enough of Vancouver’s shots getting through for a victory in a match that will feature around six goals.
