Winnipeg Jets @ Toronto Maple Leafs Tips

The Winnipeg Jets and the Toronto Maple Leafs will meet for the third time in their current three-game series on Sunday, March 14, with the score at one win each. Toronto and Winnipeg are first and second respectively in the all-Canadian NHL North Division, and are ranked 1st and 7th in the NHL league table.

Just a couple of weeks ago Toronto were on a tear, winning seven out of eight games and destroying the hopes of comeback specialists the Edmonton Oilers with three crushing wins. Then came back-to-back losses to the Vancouver Canucks, a team second from bottom of the North Division, and suddenly the Maple Leafs weren’t invincible any more.

The first two games of this series between Toronto and Winnipeg have been close, hard-fought seven-goal thrillers, and this will be more of the same. However, I’m backing Toronto to come good on Sunday with an impressive victory deserving of the NHL’s top team.

The Maple Leafs front-three of Mitchell Marner, Auston Matthews and John Tavares have hit 40 goals and 56 assists between them, and Toronto have scored an incredible 97 goals this season. I’m expecting them to add to that tally in a game that will feature at least six goals.

Head to Head

The Winnipeg Jets and the Toronto Maple Leafs have played each other a total of 41 times in the NHL regular season. The Jets currently lead their head-to-head by the narrowest of margins, 21 wins to 20. In the eight matches these teams have played since the beginning of 2018, Toronto lead by 5-3. In their most recent game - which took place on Friday, March 12 of this year - the Maple leafs defeated the Jets 4-3.

Winnipeg Jets Form

The Winnipeg Jets are currently second in the NHL North Division, the all Canadian division put together by the NHL to safeguard Canadian teams from having to cross the border into the United States during the pandemic. Winnipeg have played 26 games, with 16 victories and 10 defeats, two of which were overtime shootouts. Their tally of 34 points is six behind division leaders the Toronto Maple Leafs, although Winnipeg have two games in hand over Toronto.

Winnipeg are 7-3 in their last 10 games, which includes three victories over the Montreal Canadiens, three wins over the Vancouver Canucks, and a 4-3 win over Toronto, which the Maple Leafs avenged two days later. On Sunday comes the third chapter of this miniseries.

Toronto Maple Leafs Form

The Toronto Maple Leafs have topped the NHL North Division since early in the season, and have consistently had the most points in the NHL. Toronto have played 28 games, with 19 wins against nine defeats, two of which were overtime shootouts.

Toronto are currently in danger of being overtaken at the top of the National Hockey League by the Carolina Hurricanes who are just one point behind them and on a run of seven straight victories. Right behind them on 38 points are the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Florida Panthers and the New York Islanders.

Toronto are 6-4 in their last 10 games, and currently involved in a three-match series against the Winnipeg Jets. The Maple Leafs lost their first game to the Jets 4-3 on Wednesday (March 10) but won the second game on Friday 4-3 after an overtime shootout.

The first two games between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Winnipeg Jets have been extremely close with plenty of goals, exactly what one would expect from games between the top-two teams in the North Division. So far we have seen 14 goals - seven from each team - over those two games.
Sunday’s game will surely see more of the same, however I’m backing Toronto to come good with an impressive victory. Toronto’s prolific strike force will finally break through and power the Maple Leafs to a victory by at least two clear goals, in a match featuring  at least six goals.
