Winnipeg Jets @ Calgary Flames Tips

The Winnipeg Jets and the Calgary Flames will face each other in an NHL regular season game on Tuesday, March 30. It’s their 8th meeting of the season, with Winnipeg 4-3 up. Both of these teams compete in the all-Canadian North Division, where the Jets are currently second to the Toronto Maple Leafs, while Calgary are back in fifth place.

These two teams swapped results at the weekend; Winnipeg winning 3-2 on Saturday, but Calgary hitting back with a 4-2 victory on Sunday. In Sunday’s game, Josh Leivo and Mark Giordano put Calgary 2-0 up in the 1st period, only for Winnipeg to hit back with goals from Mason Appleton and Logan Stanley tin the 2nd to level the score.

However, Calgary would not be denied, and Andrew Mangiapane broke the deadlock in the 3rd period to make it 3-2, before the Flames’ Sam Bennet grabbed a fourth to secure the win.
I’m backing Winnipeg to turn the tables on Calgary once again on Tuesday. I’m picking the Jest to defeat the Flames by at least two goals, in a match that will feature around five goals. My anytime goalscorer is Winnipeg’s Kyle Connor.

Head to Head

The Winnipeg Jets and the Calgary Flames have played each other 48 times in NHL regular season games, with Winnipeg and Calgary currently tied at 24-24 (1st time this writer has ever seen that happen!)

Clearly, games between these two teams are highly competitive: In the 11 matches they have played over the past three seasons, Winnipeg lead 6-5. The Jets and the Flames have faced each other seven times in 2021, with the Jets leading 4-3. In their most recent encounter on Sunday (March 28), Calgary won 4-2.

Winnipeg Jets Form

The Winnipeg Jets are currently 2nd in the NHL North Division on 44 points, just two points adrift of the Toronto Maple Leafs. There are three very good teams at the top of the North Division, and breathing down Winnipeg’s neck are the third-placed Edmonton Oilers on 43 points.

The North Division was created by the NHL to prevent the Canadian teams from having to repeatedly travel across the US border during the global pandemic. The result is the most talent-laden and competitive division in the league.

March has been a tough month for Winnipeg, and they suffered a sequence of 5 defeats in 8 games earlier in the month. The Jets hit back like the quality team they are, with three-straight wins, including two impressive displays against the Vancouver Canucks, winning 4-0 and 5-1. However, on Sunday Calgary got the better of them 4-2.

Calgary Flames Form

The Calgary Flames are currently fifth in the North division, with 16 wins and 20 defeats for a total of 35 points. Although Calgary have struggled near the bottom of the table all season, they are a talented team and have beaten even the best sides in 2021 including a pair of victories over the North Division leaders the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Toward the end of March, the Flames suffered four consecutive defeats against Toronto, Ottawa (twice) and Winnipeg, but on Sunday they ended that run with a 4-2 victory over the Jets.
