Vegas Golden Knights @ Los Angeles Kings Tips

The Vegas Golden Knights will take on the Los Angeles Kings in an NHL West Division regular-season game on Thursday, April 15. This will be the 8th meeting of 2021 between the Knights and the Kings, with Vegas leading 5-2.

The Golden Knights are currently second in the NHL West Division, having only recently been supplanted at the top of the table by the Colorado Avalanche. At the start of April the Knights lost four out of five matches – their worse sequence of the season – and that was enough for Colorado to surpass them at the top of the division.

The LA Kings are second from bottom of the West Division, just five points clear of the Anaheim Ducks.  For much of the season they managed to cling on to mid-table respectability, but in recent weeks they began an inevitable slide toward the bottom, losing 8 of their last 11 games.

I’m backing the Vegas Golden Knights to continue their pursuit of top-spot in the table, the playoffs and even a maiden Staley Cup with a win over the LA Kings on Thursday.

  • Vegas 2nd in NHL West Division
  • Vegas are 28-13 this season
  • Kings 7th in NHL West Division
  • Kings 16-25 this season

Head to Head

The Vegas Golden Knights and the Los Angeles Kings have played each other a total of 29 times, with Vegas leading this head-to-head 17-12. In their last 11 matches covering last season and 2021, Vegas lead 6-5.  They have faced each other seven times this season, with the Golden Knights ahead 5-2. Their most recent meeting on Tuesday (April 13) finished 4-2 to Vegas.

Vegas Golden Knights Form

The Vegas Golden Knights are currently second in the NHL West Division with 28 wins and 13 defeats. Vegas’ tally of 53 points from 41 games leaves them four points behind league leaders the Colorado Avalanche. Vegas are seven points clear of third placed Minnesota Wild, and barring a total collapse, look a cert to be competing in the playoffs later this season.

This season teams play 56 games compared to the usual 82, so Vegas still have 15 matches to play and 30 more points to chase.  For most of this season, Vegas have been relentlessly consistent, and they are surely returning to that level. They have now won four of their last five games, and on Tuesday scored their fifth win of 2021 over the LA Kings 4-2.

Los Angeles Kings Form

The LA Kings are 7th in the NHL West Division, with 16 wins and 25 defeats, six of which were overtime shootouts that earned the Kings a point each time. Los Angeles are on 38 points, just six behind the fourth-placed St. Louis Blues, but just 5 points above bottom team the Anaheim Ducks.

In 2020 the LA Kings finished the season second from bottom of the Pacific Division, and the season before that they finished rock bottom. LA have lost five of their last seven games, and would appear to have almost given up. It’s hard to believe that this is the same team that won the Stanley Cup in 2012 and 2014.

Verdict

Just a few years ago the LA Kings were the best team in the NHL, with two Stanley Cup wins in three years. Now they are heading toward their third season of finishing in the bottom two of their division.

The Vegas Golden Knights are new team with a ton of ambition, and it’s surely just a matter of time before they win their first Stanley Cup. It might even be this year, and they’ll take another step toward that with victory over the LA Kings on Thursday. This game will feature around eight goals, and Max Pacioretty is my pick for anytime goals scorer.
